Lady Owls win, Owls battle close loss

    PRESQUE ISLE – The University of Maine at Presque Isle lady owls out-scored the University of Maine-Augusta 35-19 in the second half of play to capture the win on Sunday after in Wieden Gymnasium. With the win, the Owls move to 9-6 on the season.     Erica Davis (North Yarmouth, ME) led her team with 21 points, earning a double-double on the day by grabbing a career high of 24 rebounds. She also had five steals in the game.
    Megan Korhonen (Littleton, ME) had 14 points and 11 rebounds, earning her first double-double of the season. Freshman Karen Creighton (Sussex, NB) earned her first career double-double, adding 13 points and 11 boards, while teammate Emily Moore (Lisbon, ME) finished with 11 points to help her team earn the win.
    Freshman Jennifer Lola paced UM-Augusta with 25 points, 12 rebounds, and eight steals.
    Lola also made 17 of her 20 free throw attempts. Jessica Taylor chipped in 11 points for the UMA Moose.
    The Owl men battled back from a 20 point deficit at the half to tie the game with just minutes remaining in regulation, but failed to prevail as UMA picked up the 97-93 victory over the Owls.
    UMPI had a few chances to tie the game within the closing seconds of the half to force overtime, but were shut down in their attempts. With the loss, the Owls move to 2-14 on the season.
    Devon Peaslee (Woolwich, ME) led his team with 27 points, dishing out eight assists and earning four steals. Anthony Wingate (East Orange, NJ) scored 22 points, while freshmen Jeremy Brock (Easton, ME) and Loren Fawthrop (Amherst, NS) had 13 and 12 points respectively; both also finished the game with nine rebounds.
    Jordan Guy (Hodgdon, ME) added 10 points in the loss.
    Herbert Davis scored 20 points for UM-Augusta. Lawrence Williams had 17 points and 15 rebounds, while James Ayotte scored 17 points and Philip Ellis finished with 10.
    On Wednesday, Feb. 4, the University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s and women’s basketball teams both earned a loss to UMaine-Fort Kent during evening conference games at the UMFK Sports Center.
    Leading all scorers was Owl senior Davis who earned yet another double-double on the season, scoring 21 points, 14 rebounds, and five steals. Korhonen finished the game with 10 points.
    Ashley Ames scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead UMaine-Fort Kent. Kristen Violette added 17 points for the winners and Telisha Herring netted 13 and dished out nine assists.
    On the men’s side, the Bengals extended their winning streak to eight games with a victory over the Owls.
    Wingate led his team with 21 points, while freshman forward Ben Rosser (Caribou, ME) earned a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Peaslee added 10 points in the loss.
    Fort Kent was led by Brandon Fox who led all scorers with 25 points, while Hamill Bassue netter 18 and snatched 10 rebounds. Ilija Kalajdzic grabbed 11 rebounds in the win.
    Both Owls teams are back in action on Wednesday night as they look to host the Clippers of UMaine-Machias.
    The men’s game begins at 5 p.m., followed by the UMPI women at 7 p.m.
