Lewiston – Mitzi Jean Pechnik Robbins of South Paris, passed away on February 15 at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, with her loving family by her side, after a six year long determined battle with ovarian cancer, during which time she never gave up hope, not even at the very end. Mitzi was born in Lewiston on February 14, 1952, the daughter of Elsie Raasumaa Pechnik and William Pechnik.
She graduated from Oxford Hills High School in 1970. During her teen years she was a member of the Norway Paris Comets Drum and Bugle Corp. After attending Husson College she worked in Presque Isle as a SPED School Secretary and as an accountant for Maine Potato Growers. During her stay in Presque Isle she was also a member of the Luna Chapter 126 Order of the Eastern Star and she was affiliated with the Methodist church. Moving closer to her family in central and western Maine, she was an accountant for Community Oil in Rumford and Pottle Works in Mechanic Falls. In spite of her debilitating illness and the side effects of her treatments, Mitzi continued to work until September of 2008. Mitzi was a superb cook, joyously sharing her dishes and baked goods with friends and family. She had a talent for complicated crochet, crafting heirlooms for each immediate family member in the last year of her life. Mitzi was a continuous and generous giver. She seldom came empty handed when visiting friends and family, even when her visits were frequent, bringing flowers, fish from the fish truck, fresh vegetables from a roadside stand, etc. Mitzi never expected anything in return. Loving animals, Mitzi made sure she spoiled her own as well as her immediate families’ pets with ongoing attention and treats. During her last six months, Mitzi continued to be a devoted mother to her son, Rob, whom was and will eternally continue to be her ultimate pride and joy, as well as a devoted daughter and sister. During this time, she also gratefully and intently watched many things, such as the gradual changing of colors of the fall trees, the late fall leaves falling from the trees, snowflakes gently falling, the glitz and spirit of Christmas, the clouds floating across the sky, the wind moving branches, and the birds flitting around the feeding.
Mitzi is survived by her family members that loved her deeply and will continue to cherish her…her son, Rob Robbins of Auburn; her mother, Elsie Pechnik of South Paris; sister, Christina Andrews and her husband Clifford of New Gloucester; sister, Billie Lou Damon and her husband Harold of South Paris; niece, Sara Andrews of Portland; niece, Tami Andrews of Rumford; niece, Darcy Sekerak and family of Winthrop; nephew, Joseph Damon of South Paris and several aunts and uncles. She was predeceased by her loving father, William Pechnik. Mitzi considered her oncologist, Dr. Modaressi at St. Mary’s, the Oncology Dept. at St. Mary’s and the ICU at St. Mary’s as extended family. Her family is indeed deeply grateful for their compassion and their unfaltering expert care. Thank you.
