The Houlton girls and Katahdin boys captured the 2009 Southern Aroostook Junior High School Invitational Basketball Tournament crowns.
In the girls’ championship, the game was very close as the Houlton squad narrowly defeated Southern Aroostook, 39-38. In the boys’ final, the Katahdin Cougars routed Hodgdon, 73-49.
In the first contest of the tournament, the Houlton girls overpowered Hodgdon, 33-9, while the Hodgdon boys overtook Southern Aroostook, 45-33. In the last game on Monday, Feb. 9, the Houlton boys defeated Ashland, 57-40.
In the second round of the tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 10, the Southern Aroostook girls edged Katahdin, 45-44 and the Katahdin boys topped Houlton, 57-37, setting up the championship games.
Each year at the conclusion of the tournament, the coaches whose teams are involved in the tournament select an all-star team and Most Valuable Player.
Named to the girls’ all-star squad are Tori Hanson and Marina Cameron of Houlton; Sable Altvater and Rochelle Sirois of Southern Aroostook; Jennah Steamer of Hodgdon and Megan Merry of Katahdin, who was also named MVP of the tournament.
Selected for the boys’ all-star team are Colton Bivighouse and Billy Livezey of Katahdin; Robert Rockwell and Jessie Boulier of Southern Aroostook; Devon Logie and Nick Lunn of Hodgdon. Lunn was also named the MVP of the tournament.
