PRESQUE ISLE — Athletes and outdoor enthusiasts will gather during two special events during the month of March right here in the Star City.
The first is an activity the Presque Isle Snowmobile Club has been doing for several years. “Annually, the Club hosts a Fund Day for the clients of the Opportunity Training Center. This is a day that we give these special people snowmobile rides and treat them to a hamburger and more,” said Dave Steeves, member of the Club’s Board of Directors.
Steeves said it’s an event enjoyed by all who participate.
“The joy we see on their faces has made this annual event grow every year, not only in clients participating but also the number of snowmobilers giving of their time,” he said.
This year’s ride is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 4.
“Due to the success of this annual event, this year’s Fun Day will again be held at the Aroostook Shrine Club, located on the Houlton Rd. The event will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until noon,” said Steeves.
A Special Olympics event is also scheduled in March.
“On Tuesday, March 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Special Olympics events will take place at the Nordic Heritage Center on the Fort Rd.,” said Sgt. Joey Seeley, of the PIPD.
Seeley has been very actively involved with Special Olympics for many years, both locally and internationally. Just a few years ago, Seeley traveled to Japan to take part in Special Olympics festivities halfway around the world.
The upcoming event will focus on winter activities.
“They’ll compete in snow shoeing and cross country skiing,” said Seeley.
Volunteers are welcome at both events.
