The Skating Club of Maine has had a busy start to 2009!
Basic skills and advanced skaters from the Skating Club of Maine and other clubs from lower Maine participated in the Annual Smiles on Ice Competition at The Forum on Jan. 24.

Skaters who participated in the test session are, in front from left, Alison Bell, Alyssa Trombly, Katelyn White and Emma Bonner; second row, from left, Michaela Bragg, Jessica Aube, Kelsie Spooner, Lee Ireland and Carly Bell; and, in back from left, Chelsey Carrol, Sarah Sjoberg, Ariana Babineau, Shayna da Cruz and Jessica Scott. Skaters were able to compete against other skaters at their level by way of elements and participating in choreographed programs to a musical selection.
An awards ceremony for each level was held and every skater earned a medal or a trophy.
On Feb. 14, advanced skaters participated in a professionally judged United States Figure Skating (USFS) test session held at The Forum in Presque Isle. Judges from Portland, Maine; Connecticut and Vermont were brought in to review the skaters at their appropriate level.
Skaters from all over the county participated. The individual successes were: Sarah Hebert of Fort Fairfield- Juvenile Moves in the Field & 14 Step; Michaela Bragg of Washburn-Preliminary Moves in the Field, Preliminary Freestyle, Dutch Waltz, Canasta Tango & Rhythm Blues; Sarah Sjoberg of Washburn-Preliminary Moves in the Field, Preliminary Freestyle & Dutch Waltz; Jessica Aube of Washburn–Pre-Preliminary Moves in the Field, Pre-Preliminary Freestyle.
All skaters are coached by Cortney Rector, Haley Kelley and Katie Smith.
The coaching staff and skaters are now in preparation for the Annual Musical on Ice “Broadway on Blades”, which will be held at The Forum on March 14 at 1 p.m. & 7 p.m. Tickets are being sold at Carroll’s Auto Sales, The Forum or from any Skating Club of Maine member.
