The elementary children at Limestone Community School were challenged to read 1,000 books during this school year; as of January, the students had read over 1,300 books. To reward the students for their hard work, the teachers at LCS held a special Winter Fun Day on Feb. 11.

Hannah King, grade 1, learned a lesson in gravity while sledding during Winter Fun Day on Feb. 11.
Students in grades pre-K to grade 4 spent the afternoon outside in the snow. The Winter Fun Day was set up in stations so that children could participate in all of the activities. At the sledding station, students whizzed down hills on sleds and inner tubes. High school students from the LCS volunteered to push the sled from the top of the hill to ensure a fast and fun ride for the elementary students. Despite a few upsets and crashes, the students enjoyed themselves.
Students also tramped along an oval trail on snowshoes at another station. It was their first time on snowshoes for many students; The Caribou Recreation Center generously allowed LCS to borrow the snowshoes for the event. The snowshoe trail was oval shaped with one end going uphill and one end going downhill. The course was challenging while remaining fun for the children. Multiple students looped the trail numerous times, and even LCS Principal Mr. Caron couldn’t help but take a trip around the trail.
The third station was an obstacle course, which led students through a maze of ups and downs. They started the course by walking under a series of hockey sticks that were stuck in the snow in teepee shapes. Students then crawled through tunnels in the snow that were buried underneath a large round parachute. When they made their way out of the parachute maze, children then climbed over and under various monkey bars until they reached the end.
Students were able to visit the refreshment station any time during the afternoon of winter fun for a cup of hot chocolate and doughnut holes
Winter Fun Day was made possible by the generosity of many local organizations and volunteers. Limestone staff members partnered with the Limestone Recreation Center, the Caribou Recreation Center, the Limestone Ski Club, and the Limestone Snowmobile Club to sponsor the afternoon.
LCS expressed special thanks to all the folks who’s hard work made the day special for the children.
Because of the determination and hard work put forth by the students at LCS toward their reading, the teachers felt it was extremely important to reward them for their diligence. The reading challenge has continued at the school; as of February’s end, the current total number of books that have been read has risen to almost 1,500 books.
