LIMESTONE – James B. Saunders, 77, passed away Thursday morning, March 5, 2009, at the Limestone home of his loving companion and caregiver, Norma Daley. He was born July 15, 1931 in Willis Branch, Fayette County, West Virginia, the son of Rev. George B. and Betty Ann (Bowyer) Saunders. He was educated in the Willis Branch, WV school system and enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 and served his country during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Jim reenlisted with the United States Air Force, retiring from the military at Loring Air Force Base, Limestone in 1970 as a Tech Sergeant. Jim was also employed by the U.S. Civil Service at the Loring Air Force Base Commissary and the Base Exchange. He was married to Dorothy C. Graf on June 7, 1963. Mr. Saunders was a dedicated member of the Limestone Masonic Lodge Number 214 AF & AM for over twenty-four years where he held numerous offices including Worshipful Master in 1998.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; one brother, Roy Saunders; one sister, Dora Brinn. He is survived by his companion and caregiver of nine years, Norma Daley of Limestone; two brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Betty Saunders of Rockledge, Florida, Alfred L. and Joan Saunders of Charleston, South Carolina; one sister, Nina F. Mayfield of Stanley, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews. He will be dearly and fraternally remembered by the officers and members of the Limestone Masonic Lodge Number 214 AF & AM. In keeping with Jim’s wishes, there will be no services at this time.
A Masonic service of committal with full military honors will be conducted later in the spring at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Caribou. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield.
