Boy Scout news
On Saturday, March 7, Washburn Boy Scouts took part in the annual Scout Show at the Aroostook Centre Mall. This year Troop 177 presented Winter Camping as their theme and were awarded the first-place trophy.
The boys instructed the public in safe and comfortable ways to camp out in winter. They provided much information and demonstrations including: snow shelters, clothing, cooking utensils and proper high-protein food. Mall patrons were given a short quiz to check their skills in winter camping, followed by an orientation from the Scouts. The day started with a parade of all Scouts led by the National Guard from the food court to the memorial wall, where a short service and recognition was held.
Washburn Scouts are no strangers to the winning unit at the show and the boys represented their town well. Troop 177 has been sponsored by the Washburn Rotary Club since its original Charter in 1965. Scouts attending included: Kegan Page, Kody Brissette, Taylor Skinner, Nicholas Gumprecht, Jacob Reed, Parker Thompson, Brandon Cropley, Andrew White, Tyler Farley, Daniel Roy, Assistant Scoutmaster Greg Page, Scoutmaster Larry Harrison and Assistant Leader Mike Thompson.
Legion celebrates Valentine’s
A potluck supper celebrating Valentine’s Day was held on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the regular meeting for Dow Post 48 of the American Legion in Washburn. Members and guests were treated to a delicious meal followed by a short business meeting and a social time. Members approved a calendar of events for the year that will be certain to be of interest to all 28 members of the Post. New members are always welcome as well as those members who are not frequent attendees. Without member support, the American Legion goes unnoticed in town for all that they have done and are doing now.
Special donation
The really great idea that Mallory Martin came up with recently was of great benefit to the Central Aroostook Humane Society in Presque Isle. Mallory decided to help some animals at the shelter by sending them a few items of food and litter. She knew what the shelter was all about because she and her sister, Jordyn, have two cats, Cooper and Zoey, that they adopted from the shelter. Mallory’s idea blossomed with a donation box being set up at the Washburn Food Mart on Saturday, March 7. Jordyn assisted her sister by being a “greeter” at the door and both sisters explained their purpose.
All came together, and several large boxes of donations were collected as well as some money from a bake sale held at the store that day.
After all was said and done, the Martin family drove to the shelter to deliver the goodies and spent a bit of time visiting with the animals who benefited from their generous donation.
Library bookmarks
The library will hold a Story Time on Monday, March 23, at 5:30 p.m. and the theme will be “Dr. Seuss’s Birthday.”
