Easton students set sights on Paris

French Club trip
The Easton High School French Club students are preparing for their upcoming 10-day trip to France in June under the direction of Mary Ruth Nichols, French teacher.

The experience begins in Paris with guided tours of several monuments including the Louvre, Montmartre, Notre Dame, L’Arc de Triomphe, the Paris Opera, the Pompidou Center, and the Conciergerie where many were imprisoned during the French Revolution, including Marie Antoinette, Danton and Robspierre.
The second day in Paris will be spent visiting the sumptuous Palace of Versailles and enjoying the Trianon Gardens and fountains. The day ends with a special meal at the Eiffel Tower’s restaurant, ALTITUDE 95.
The group will then travel to visit the Gothic Cathedral of Chartres and then on to the Loire Valley where they will visit the beautiful Renaissance Chateaux of Chenonceau and Amboise, where Leonardo Da Vinci is buried in the chapel. As the group travels south toward the Mediteranean Sea, the landscape changes to limestone plateaux. This is the land of medieval towns such as Bastiac, Domme and Rocamadour where one can easily envision knights in armor, ladies with tall pointed caps like the chateaux towers, goats grazing and delicacies like truffles and goose liver pate readily available on a walking tour.
The group will spend part of the afternoon in the town of Carcassonne, noted for the largest fortified walled city in Europe. An awesome treat will be visiting the Lascaux Cave museum in the Perigord area where the pre-historic cave drawings were discovered in 1940 by four young boys out rabbit hunting.
The tour will conclude in the south of France in the old city of Marseille which boasts the largest seaport in France. From the old port one can see the Chateau d’If where the Count of Monte Cristo was said to be imprisoned according to Alexandre Dumas’ novel. If you have any questions, call Mrs. Nichols at 488-7702 or at home, 473-7707.
Special Sunday service

There are five Sundays in the month of March and as has been the custom for the Easton churches, that fifth Sunday evening one church in the community hosts the other churches for a special service. This month, on March 29, the Pentecostal Church will be the host with a Tenenbrae Service beginning at 6 p.m.  All are welcome.
Mr. Easton Pageant
The Easton Senoir Class will be holding a Mr. Easton Pageant on March 27 at 7 p.m. Ticket price will be $5 for adults, $3 for students, $10 for a family and $3 for senior citizens.
Kiwanis meeting
A special meeting was held on Tuesday, March 10, at the Frances Malcolm Science Center when three Kiwanis clubs met for a pizza meal and a Real World light show on Saturn. Club members and guests from Caribou, Presque Isle and Easton enjoyed the evening.
Winter Carnival
The Easton Recreation Department was able to hold their annual Winter Carnival on Saturday, March 7, even though it was somewhat rainy in the forenoon. A great crowd of children and adults turned out for the afternoon. The Easton snowmobile trail groomer, manned by Bruce Flewelling, hauled many of the children up Kinney Hill for the quick ride down. Snowmobiles with sleds towed behind were also in use.  The Easton Kiwanis Club grilled hotdogs with buns, as well as drinks, for all those who wanted one. Donations were made which were returned to the Rec Department. The evening before, lots of games were played at the elementary school gym and cafeteria. There were six teams playing cribbage with Paul Dudley coming out the winner. After the Saturday afternoon on Kinney Hill, everyone gathered at the cafeteria for a potluck supper, followed by a mothers vs. daughters basketball game, which the daughters won by one point, and the fathers’ and sons’ basketball game which the sons lost by one point. All in all it was a very fun-filled weekend.
Hospitalized
Seven-year-old Zack Weeks has been hospitalized for the second time at The Aroostook Medical Center, with double pneumonia. Zack is the son of Robin Hall and grandson of Rev. and Mrs. Dan Blevens. We wish him a quick recovery.
Visits/Sympathy
Vera Cullins has returned home to Easton from a month with her daughter, Gail Gentry, and Gail’s husband, Richard, in Saco. Gail, who was 64, has been bravely fighting lung cancer for a long time but lost her battle  on March 6. Gail grew up in Easton graduating from Easton High School, before attending Husson College in Bangor. After leaving college, she lived in Florida for a short period and then in Massachusetts for more than 30 years where she worked for the Raytheon Co. for 24 of those years, then they moved to Saco in 2003. She loved music and enjoyed playing the piano, like her mother. Gail is survived by: her husband of 34 years, Richard; her mother, Vera Cullins, of Easton; two brothers, Darrell Cullins and family, of Frankfort, Germany; and Dale Cullins of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her father, Raymond Cullins, and twin brother, Gaylen. Her funeral was held on March 10 at Burke-Magaliozzi Funeral Home in Andover, Mass., with a service afterward at the chapel at West Parish. Burial will be at West Parish Garden Cemetery, Andover, Mass. Those who wish may contribute in Gail’s memory to: Bible Baptist Church, 146 Ferry Road, Saco, ME 04072 or Pine Tree Baptist Church, 704 Houlton Road, Easton, ME 04740.
Our sympathy also goes out to Jessica Scott and her son, Mason, of Easton, on the death of her mother, Barbara Cote, 65, of Patten and Easton. Barbara passed away in Presque Isle on March 6. She was born in South Kingston, R.I., the daughter of Raymond and Mildred Reed. She and her husband Chick raised many foster children and loved all kids. She is survived: by four sisters — Evelyn Dejesus, Mary Jane Mattlock, Dot Olson and Pat Morallis; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, James “Chick.” Her funeral was held on Thursday, March 12, at the Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls, with Steve Richardson officiating .
