Houlton, Maine and Enfield, Connecticut – Eugene Willis Gould, 80, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at the Evergreen Health Care Center. Born on June 21, 1928, in Houlton, ME, he was the son of the late Willis and Florence (Morris) Gould.
Eugene attended schools in Houlton and Richmond, Me., graduating from Richmond High School. Eugene traveled extensively throughout the United States despite a crippling handicap from an early age due to cerebral palsy. He worked in Trade Publications Sales for many years. His expertise in the English language contributed to his talent in writing many articles of prose/poetry. The following is an example from his collection, entitled "The Knowledge Tree":
"As a people we are forever in pursuit of knowledge, and that's a good thing. We do so because we know we live in a world where knowledge is king. Our curiosity propels us, and our common sense tells us, of the need to know more than we now know. What we want to know is what we don't know, because what we don't know is unknown. Only then will we see that our tree of knowledge has grown."
Eugene's knowledge and interest of any subject you wished to discuss made him an enthusiastic conversationalist.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Arnold and Iris Gould of West Suffield, CT; his niece and her husband, Katherine and Patrick Conley and their two daughters, Christen Conley Spradlin and Cari Ann Conley; and several cousins.
His family extends sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at Evergreen Health Care Center in Stafford Springs, CT, where Eugene called home for the past five years, and to the Enfield Visiting Nurses Association.  He often expressed his appreciation of their excellent care as well as that of the medical professionals who took care of him, with special thanks to Dr. Emily Daponte.
Funeral services will be handled by Dunn Funeral Home, Park St., Houlton, ME at a later date. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Houlton, ME. Please visit us at www.carmonfuneralhome.com to express condolences.
