Presque Isle – Hope (Greenlaw) Akeley, 95, died March 12, 2009, at the Presque Isle Nursing Home. Hope was born on Nov. 14, 1913 in Masardis, Maine, the daughter of George E. Greenlaw and Myrtie (Quincy) Greenlaw.
Hope graduated from Ricker Classical Institute and Aroostook State Normal School (now the University of Maine at Presque Isle) and taught elementary school at Portage Lake and Spragueville at the James School. She married Robert Vinton Akeley on June 11, 1937. Hope moved with Robert to Silver Springs, Maryland where she raised her three daughters and later taught school in Prince Georges County, Maryland. In 1969, when Robert retired from the Department of Agriculture, Hope and Robert moved back to Presque Isle with their daughter, Sarah.
Hope is survived by her three daughters, Andrea Ross of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Mary Barton Smith of Portola Valley, California and Sarah Akeley of Presque Isle, Maine; two grandsons, Robert Waters Ross and Andrew Percy Ross, and two great-grandchildren, Calvert Valentine Ross and Josephine Akeley Ross.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 9 at 11a.m. at Saint John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Interment will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle.
