ART IMMITATING ART — This picture was taken in the kitchen of my house. It shows a mixing spoon and cookbook with depth of field. The assignment was to replicate an award-winning photo.

DEFINITION — I was taking this photo to enter a contest having to do with SkillsUSA. My teacher, Mrs. White, is the one who had the idea for the photo. We cut a thin slice of kiwi and had someone held it in front of a light, which is why the background appears white, but also so that the light would go through the kiwi. I think this photo is good because there’s depth of field, leading lines and clear detail in the fingers and kiwi.

WIND-WHIPPED PLAINS — This fall I went to a field behind my house with my neighbor to take some pictures. We brought along some helium-filled balloons to add some visual interest to the shots. I loved the moody overcast sky and knew it could be used to set the mood for some great photos. The wind was so strong that it was hard to hold onto the balloons. Many of them actually ended up popping by the end of the afternoon. My favorite aspect of this photo is sense of space.

HUNTING SEASON — This picture was taken in the woods of Ashland during the 2008 hunting season. The squirrel appears to have done a bit of successful hunting of his own, pictured here, as he nibbles on something.

FIELD AND THEME — I had to take a picture of depth of field at the start of the school year and when I saw the chance to take one of these swings, I had a feeling it would turn out pretty good. We traveled to Mantle Lake Park this fall and after taking many depth of field pictures, I found this one to be my best.
