Special event
There will be a Tenebrae Service at the Pentecostal Church in Easton on Sunday, March 29, beginning at 6 p.m. This is for all churches in the town and anyone else who might like to attend. The word ‘tenebrae’ is Latin for ‘shadows.’ The purpose of the Tenebrae service is to recreate the emotional aspects of the Passion story, so this is not supposed to be a happy service, because the occasion is not happy.
Christian worship is not always supposed to be happy and exhilarating. This is in appreciation of Christ’s agony as He paid the price for our sin. The service was originally designed for Good Friday, but it can be used at other times as well. There will be solemn hymns, a sermon, communion and the lighting of many candles and the extinguishing of the same until only the Christ candle remains. Then Psalm 22 is read and the Christ candle extinguished, leaving the church in near total darkness. The purpose of the service is to recreate the betrayal, abandonment and agony of the Passion week events.
United Methodist Women
The Easton United Methodist Women met at the home of Marjorie Corey on Wednesday, March 18, with seven members present. The meeting was opened with devotions by Freda Dionne and the reading of the UMW Purpose. Secretary Marjorie Corey read the minutes of the last meeting and Treasurer Marie Hewitt reported on the unit’s finances.
Freda reported that there were six baby quilts for sale and one large one. A thank-you note was read from the Easton High School Senior Class for the donation to Project Graduation.
Only 12 visitations were made this month and no cards sent. It was voted to make Mother’s Day Sunday the Blanket Sunday for Church World Service, as has been done for several years. It was also voted to donate a sum of money to both the Aroostook Division of the Red Cross and to the Good Shepherd Food Bank. This donation to the food bank will be matched by other businesses.
The meeting was closed and dessert was served by the hostess. Those attending were: Marie Hewitt, Eldora Carter, Glenice Craig, Freda Dionne, Nina Trask, Hilda Langley and the hostess.
There will be no meeting next month as that day, April 15, is the Aroostook Sub-District UMW Meeting at the Limestone Church, where members plan to attend. Bring a sack lunch. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.
