Winterfest 2009
Winterfest 2009 began on Friday night, March 13, with a Rotary Supper of baked ham, mashed potatoes, vegetable, salad, rolls, brownies and ice cream. It was a delicious meal, served to a sell-out crowd. Fireman Fred provided entertainment during the meal. Dinner was followed by two alumni basketball games. A great crowd was on hand to cheer for their favorite players; and the best part was that Central Aroostook alumni won both games!!
Saturday morning began bright and early with the Mars Hill and Blaine Community Club’s St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast. There were over 320 meals served to a hungry crowd. The Easter basket that was raffled was won by Veneita Shaw.
Following this were a couple of Pee Wee basketball games in the gym featuring the kindergarten – 3rd- grade kids from the local recreation program. They are fun games to watch as we see our future stars in action!
A cribbage tournament also took place with 38 players in the hunt for the top spot. First place went to Jerry Taylor, of Caribou, with a score of 723 out of a possible 726!! Second place went to Vi Taylor, of Caribou, and third to Clarence Rossignol, of Caribou.
The morning also saw face painting and fun with the Shriners Klowns happening for the kids while the CAHS National Honor Society set up the Penny Carnival in the gym. There were a lot of stations for the kids’ entertainment – with the jumping tent one of the most popular spots.
The United Methodist Women held a bake sale and the Community Cupboard sold raffle tickets during the morning. The Mars Hill FFA held a Baked Potato Bar, with “Big E” style taters available as well as hotdogs and French fries.
At 12 p.m., the BINGO tables were the popular spot to be, with games running until 3 p.m.
At 2 p.m., there was an obstacle course set up for the kid’s at Big Rock.
At 5 p.m., the popular Kardboard Klassic took place with lots of entries. Winners were: Adult division – Sean Donovan; Middle School/Junior High – Connor Todd; and Children – Libby Grass, Bryant Grass, Lane Grass and Eli Payne.
The Best in Show winners were: Peace Sled – Sarah Grass, Brea York and Olivia Garrison; Case Sled – Bryant Grass, Lane Grass, Libby Grass and Eli Payne; Finishing Touch – Zoe Brewer, Mayra Gonzales, Jeremiah Maduire and Tyler Brewer.
Big Rock had a Hot Turkey Sandwich Dinner available at 5 p.m. and the crowd enjoyed the Big Air contest at 6:30 p.m. with many entrants.
Saturday night also saw a great Torchlight Parade with flashlights and flares winding their way down Mars Hill Mountain in a beautiful serpentine formation. This was followed by a fantastic fireworks display that could be seen for miles.
All in all, it was another great weekend of entertainment for this year’s Winterfest! Hope you all enjoyed it!
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center on Tuesday, March 10, at 6:30 a.m. The special speaker was President Don Zillman of the University of Maine at Presque Isle. He spoke of several different happenings on campus.
The Social Work Program students that traveled to Guatemala learned a great deal about their chosen profession and the world. There is a new testing center at the college that can be used by many local professionals that must test periodically to maintain their licenses or take a test to become licensed.
The visit to the college by Astronaut Pam Melroy was a great success. As well as speaking at the college, she spoke at a couple of local high schools. Dr. Zillman said that she was an excellent representative for NASA; she gave the audience an idea of how far they can go if they follow their dreams.
The third session of Young Professionals Institute was held with participants discussing necessary work skills needed for different jobs as well as the importance of community involvement.
Regarding the windmill that will be constructed on campus, the three tower parts are on site and the hub and blades should arrive by late March or early April.
The UMPI Men’s Baseball Team has generated a great deal of attention by the New York Times, ESPN and Sports Illustrated. They have been called the “Ultimate Road Team” as they play all their games – 39 of them – on the road.
Zillman also spoke of the 10-day trip made to China by Mike Sonntag and Zhu-Qu Lu. There were two Chinese teachers that visited UMPI in February. There is a student-faculty exchange program being discussed.
The Art Program is currently showing a Dave Estey exhibit, although the senior art students will be showing their pieces soon.
Gentile Hall currently has 1,300 community members using the facilities. There are also several local teams that use the facility for their games.
The Sportsman’s Show will be coming soon, March 28 and 29. The moose-calling competition slated to be held Saturday, March 28, is a popular event, with entries that range from “that‘s amazing“ to “you‘ve got to be kidding!”
