Perham Snow Day
The Perham Recreation and Events Committee held their annual Perham Chili Snowshoe Race on Saturday, March 7, with a good crowd attending. The course was slushy in parts due to the spring-like weather we’ve been enjoying, but the racers all took to the course in true competitive style.

The Adult 5K winners were as follows: First-place men’s trophy went to Thomas Beckum with a time of 41.32; second place was claimed by Salvatore Viola; and third place by a Viola brother, Anthony. In the adult women’s race, first-place winner was Michelle Roy with a time of 49.17 and second place went to Chelsea Sadler.
The Children’s 1K Race was great fun for participants and spectators alike, with the  winners including: Boys Division ages 7-12, first place, Daelin Viola, with a time of 6:45; second place was won by Glen Peterson; third place taken by Garrin Sadler; and fourth place being claimed by Hans Jensen. In the Girls 7 – 12 Division, Kristen Sarmiento took home the first-place trophy with a time of 9:30 and second place was claimed by Anya O’Meara.
The winners of the Boys Division ages 2-6 are as follows: first place, Jacob Roy, with a time of 8:31; second place, Oliver Peterson; and third place, Tommy O’Meara. In the Girls Division ages 2-6, first-place trophy went to Ocean Sadler, with a time of 10:47, second place went to Kristen Dube; and third place was claimed by Kirsta Jensen.
The prizes made the training and hard work worth the effort, including trophies featuring race logo and mascot, the red hot chili pepper dressed with snowshoes and earmuffs. The logo was designed and donated to the town by local artist, Shelly Malnichuk. Winners also claimed a variety of donated certificates for free goods and services from local business owners.
All racers in the Children’s Division got an Honorable Mention ribbons and a special treat of pure maple syrup moose lollipops.
The chili cook-off event was well enjoyed, generating a good deal of excitement with a total of 14 entries of chili to choose from. First place was claimed by Mary Baker, of Washburn; second-place winner was Wade Bright, of Fort Fairfield; and third place was claimed by Thomas Beckum, of Caribou; and a special award of Honorable Mention was garnered by runner-up winner Patty Doody, of Perham.
Judges, all chili experts in their own rights, included: Charlotte Wilson, Scotty Bragdon, Thom Cote and Ben Goodwin. They were all great sports and allowed themselves to be spoofed by local resident, Ray Sadler. They wore sombreros and were presented with their “advertising” posters created by Sadler as a remembrance of the day.
The final event of the day was the Snow-Shoe Walk to the Bog area with Richard Clark, local naturalist and expert on the Salmon Lake Bog and surrounding area. A dozen plus people went on the approximately four-mile walk and came away with a special recognition of what a treasure it is to have such an area to explore and enjoy locally.
The Perham Recreation and Events Committee thanks all who donated time, gifts and input into this special day, with all proceeds going towards the Salmon Lake Bog Project.
The town of Perham held the drawing for a nature lap quilt made and donated by Anita Dow. The winning ticket belonged to Audrey Pavlik, of Caribou, who bought her ticket from her sister, Sylvia Wardwell, of Perham. The proceeds of this raffle also go to the Salmon Lake Bog Project.
During Perham’s annual Town Meeting, Andrew McLaughlin was voted in as the town’s newest selectman, filling the spot vacated by Gerald Dow. Perham residents wish McLaughlin a productive and positive term and thank Mr. Dow for his years of service to his community.

Civil Rights Team hard at work
The Washburn high School’s Civil Rights Team, along with their advisor, Tracy Reed, went to the Central Aroostook Animal Shelter on Saturday, March 14, taking with them lots of goodies they had collected. The day the team went, the shelter was caring for approximately 100 cats and 35 dogs, and the students spent the morning cleaning cages, walking dogs and playing with and sometimes just holding the cats. All students worked to collect donations of food, kitty litter, blankets, towels, cleaning supplies and money. The shelter is always in need of donations. The Civic Rights Team will have a box at the high school for donations throughout the rest of the school year. All donations will be appreciated.
The Civil Rights Team will also be having a special Bingo Night and Supper on Tuesday, April 7, at the Washburn Trailrunners clubhouse. The supper will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. and the menu includes: baked beans, hotdogs, French fries, chili and assorted dessert desserts and soft drinks. Bingo will start at 7 p.m. and all proceeds will go towards the Civil Rights Team’s annual trip to Augusta for training with other teams from Maine.
Special spring rider
With the end of snowmobile season in the County nearing an end, lots of riders are getting all the trail time in they can. Thanks to all the grooming efforts in our area, this is possible. Last weekend, the warm weather enabled a family ride for Troy and Charlotte, along with two-and-half-year-old Olivia Winger, of Sinclair, to make their way down to Troy’s hometown of Washburn. Olivia was quite taken with the gas pumps at White’s Service, and even availed herself of a quick peek into the inner workings of the garage itself. She enjoyed herself, as did all who watched her in her excitement.
