“Teachable Moments”
ACAP Child and Family Services and the Family Literacy program of Houlton/Hodgdon Adult Education are presenting “Talk to Me, Making the most of Teachable Moments” this Saturday morning, March 28 at the Houlton Higher Education Center.
The two-hour program is for parents, caregivers, childcare providers and anyone interested in supporting the early literacy skills of a pre-school child. In this session, participants will use interactive activities to recognize teachable moments and identify ways to take advantage of them to promote children’s language and literacy development.
Registration and coffee begins at 8:30 a.m. with the workshop from 9 to 11 a.m. There will be a free children’s book for those attending.  For more information and to pre-register, call 521-3100 ext.5.
Can You Read This?
Over one thousand local citizens have trouble with basic reading, completing a job application, understanding a prescription, or reading a story to a child.  Literacy can change lives, and residents are invited to join Houlton’s first Tutor Recruitment Luncheon at Region Two Vocational in Houlton on Wednesday, April 15.
Aroostook County’s new literacy volunteer executive director, Dave Dow, will challenge residents to become involved.  For more information and to register for this event, call MSAD 29/70 Houlton/Hodgdon Adult Education at 521-3100, ext.5, before Monday, April 6.
Parenting Workshops
MSAD 70 and Houlton Hodgdon MSAD 29/70 Adult Education  have partnered with the Maine Parent Federation to present two workshops.
Transition into Kindergarten
Sending your child off to their first day of school is a major milestone for most parents. This workshop, Beyond the ABC’s & 123’s: A Parent’s Guide to the Transition into Kindergarten, is designed to provide useful tips on what parents and guardians can do at home to make this journey a successful one. The workshop will introduce some activities parents can work on during the summer before school starts.
All families participating in this workshop will receive a free picture book (while quantities last) about going to kindergarten to read to their child before school. The primary audience: Parents and Guardians of Pre-School aged children; length: 1.5 hours.
The workshop is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Monday, April 6, at the superintendent’s office in Hodgdon.  It is part of the Lunch & Learn series presented by the district.  Lunch will be served, and space is limited.  Early registration is encouraged.
Managing Math
For many, mathematics can be an intimidating world of unknown rules and formulas. This workshop, Managing the Mystery of Mathematics, won’t teach anyone how to be a math expert. However, it will help remove several misconceptions while giving parents helpful hints, tools, and strategies to remove some of the intimidating barriers of math.
The workshop is directed towards parents and families who may have struggling math students or parents who simply want to provide additional support & encouragement.
All participants of this workshop will receive a new book (while quantities last) with an entertaining math theme to read with their child.
The primary audience: Parents and Guardians of K-5 Students; length: 1.5 hours. This workshop will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 6 in the library at Mill Pond School.
To registration for both programs call  532-9228 or e-mail rfoster@staff.msad70.net.
