PRESQUE ISLE – The art studio at the University of Maine at Presque Isle was buzzing with activity earlier this winter, as more than 60 middle school students from around Aroostook County gathered for a day-long art workshop.
Art education students introduced the group to different types of art, such as printmaking, wire sculpture, altered books and group painting. Students made sculptures out of chicken wire, traced their silhouettes and used them as a printmaking canvas, and “redecorated” used books.
Organizers called the event a win-win activity, as it allowed art education students to practice their teaching techniques with real students, while also giving middle schoolers a new appreciation for art and introducing them to a college art studio setting.

ARTFUL EXPERIENCE – About 60 middle schoolers from all over Aroostook County took pat in a day-long workshop at UMPI on Dec. 5, learning about various art mediums and getting an opportunity to try their hand at creating their own pieces of art. Here, students use chicken wire, designing one-of-a-kind keepsakes to remember the event.
