UMPI students spend February break at bio lab

Six University of Maine at Presque Isle students spent their February break taking a hands-on laboratory course in Molecular Biology Research Techniques at the Mount Desert Island Biology Laboratory in Salisbury Cove.

All course expenses (including housing and meals) were paid through the Maine INBRE (IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence) grant. The course was limited to 12 students and six of them were from UMPI, including: premedical biology majors Hannah Hopkins, Rose Webb and Isaac Raymond; professional biology major Daniel Sheffield; environmental studies major Jared Monahan; and psychology major/niology minor Harrison Kilpatrick.
The focus of the students’ research was the molecular biology of antibacterial proteins in lobster and possible implications for lobster shell disease. The group has been invited to return in April for the 36th Maine Biological and Medical Sciences Symposium and will have the chance to network with biologists from all over the state. They may also have the opportunity to present a poster presentation during the event. The group also will be giving a presentation on their experience at UMPI’s University Day in April.
For additional information about opportunities for UMPI students at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, contact Dr. Bonnie Wood, professor of biology, at 768-9446; or Dr. Jason Johnston, assistant professor of wildlife ecology at 768-9652.
