HOULTON — The Houlton Unitarian Church, one of a handful of area locations on the National Register of Historic Places, will present the Celtic and Acadian group, Gaelstrumm, in concert this coming Saturday, April 18, at 7 p.m. The concert is part of the church’s ongoing efforts to preserve the imposing structure which was built after the “Great Fire of Houlton.” The inferno destroyed the original building and nearly leveled the town in 1902.
Rev. David Hutchinson says the concert “is an opportunity to hear and experience authentic Acadian and Gaelic entertainment.” Gaelstrumm’s core group of five musicians includes two women who offered an earlier, well-received concert in Houlton when they performed as Celtique Air which Hutchinson described as “accomplished string and harp musicians.”
The performance will be held in the church’s sanctuary at the corner of Military and Kelleran Streets. Hutchinson says it’s a real “family event. And tickets are selling steadily.” Prices are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Student tickets are $6; seniors, $10. Children under 12 are admitted free with an adult; Canadian money is at par.
Tickets are available at Visions, 66 Main St. and at York’s Bookstore in Market Square, Houlton. In Woodstock, New Brunswick, tickets are on sale at Fusion Coffee Company, 612 Main St. Advanced ticket reservations may be made by calling (207) 538-9264.
