AUGUSTA — Senator Troy D. Jackson (D-Aroostook) of Allagash released the following statement regarding a headline in today's Kennebec Journal, 'Senator Seeks a Road to Nowhere.' The headline was in regards to a story about legislation sponsored by Senator Jackson to request federal funding for the extension of I-95 into Northern Aroostook County.
Senator Jackson: "To say that the largest county in the state, the largest county east of the Mississippi, equal in size to the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined, is 'nowhere' is not only a sign of poor reporting, it's pure ignorance.
"Far from 'nowhere', Northern Maine is home to approximately 72,000 people – 31,000 households. Statewide, agriculture, forestry, and fishing contribute roughly $750 million to Maine's gross domestic product, many of those products originating from The County, and distributed across the country and across the world. We are the workers of Maine, and our reputation is unparalleled."
