ORONO – The Maine National Honor Society (MNHS) Convention was held March 12-13. This year’s theme was “Giving Hope.” Since this year’s State Service Project benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the MNHS officers wanted to pick a theme that ran along with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and “Giving Hope” seemed to be the perfect choice. This foundation gives children with illnesses and their families hope by granting wishes, so this year the convention revolved around these inspirational people.

The NHS Banquet was Thursday, March 12 at 6 p.m. at Jeff’s Catering Banquet and Convention Center in Brewer. After a delicious meal provided by Jeff’s Catering Service, the keynote address was given by Robert Shetterly, an artist and author from Brooksville.
Shetterly’s book, “Americans Who Tell the Truth,” combines portraits of famous Americans with their words of inspiration and honesty. Shetterly shared inspirational words from Americans and exhibited some of his portraits at the Convention Center. The annual dance followed the keynote address.
On Friday, March 13, the events moved to the University of Maine at Orono. The keynote speakers were former Attorney General Steven Rowe, Larry Adrian, a P.A. with the Maine Heart Surgical Association, and a representative from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Although the speakers were of diverse professions, each offered a way of “Giving Hope” to others.
The day’s events concluded with the induction of the 2010 state officers:
    • Madelyn Carson, Presque Isle High School, president.
    • Lisa Dayringer, Easton Junior/Senior High School, vice president.
    • Samuel Chasse, Fort Kent Community High School, secretary.
    • Hillary Dolloff, Mountain Valley High School, public relations.
