Caribou – Harry N. Kearney, 90, died April 20, 2009 at Caribou. He was born in Bangor October 29, 1918, the son of the late Harry and Katherine (Hooper) Kearney. In 1935 Harry obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a graduate of Fryeburg Academy. Mr. Kearney served with the US Army Air Corps during WW II in the Pacific Theatre and was a member of the Lister-Knowlton Post 9389 VFW. In May of 1942 he married Louise Proctor Ward. Mr. Kearney was a retired Maine Game Warden, serving in various districts in Maine for over 32 years. He also served as the Supervisor of Baxter State Park for several years as well as being an agent for the Internal Revenue Service for 14 years. Mr. Kearney was a faithful member of the Caribou United Baptist Church and was an active member of Caribou Lodge #170 AF & AM where he was a past master and also served as the Secretary for many years. He was a member of the Anah Temple Shrine and was also a member and past Worthy Patron of Elizabeth Chapter Order of Eastern Star. Harry will be remembered for his passion and love of the outdoors. He was a registered Maine Guide and also taught the Maine Guide Class for over 20 years. He was an expert fly tier, canoe builder, fly fisherman and story teller. His larger than life personality, his sense of humor, his generosity and his compassion for others will be fondly remembered by many. Mr. Kearney was a true gentleman in every sense of the word.
Surviving in addition to his wife of over 67 years, Louise, of Caribou are his two daughters and sons-in-law Patricia Kearney Aishton and her husband Richard of Farmington and Colleen Kearney Graffam and her husband Stephen of Westbrook, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Mr. Kearney was predeceased by a daughter Laura Madelyn Kearney, a brother Harold and a sister Madelyn.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009 from the Caribou United Baptist Church with Rev. Josh Burden, officiating. Interment will be late in the spring at the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Mr. Kearney may do so through the Caribou United Baptist Church Memorial Fund. Following the service all were invited to a time of fellowship and refreshment in the church dining area. Arrangements by the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou.
