On Sunday, June 7, in conjunction with Youth Appreciation Sunday (ages infant through college), East Ridge Union Church will be dedicating the new stained glass window in memory of former pastor Steve Perry during the morning service at 10 a.m. The window was made possible thanks to many generous donations. Pastor Perry passed away in September 2002. All are invited to attend.
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center Tuesday, May 26 at 6:30 a.m. Presque Isle Rotarian Theresa Fowler spoke briefly about the Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce and had pamphlets to hand out.
The special speaker was Mike Gosselin. He spoke about the pigeons and doves he owns and breeds. He has been interested in pigeons since he was very young.
There are over 3,000 varieties of the birds. He currently has around 225 birds, costing around $34 per week to feed.
They have a unique homing ability, which has to be developed. He takes them out around three times a week to give them a chance to exercise. They will typically fly close to home until they get a bearing on the surroundings. He typically loses two to four each month to hawks in the area.
They are a very clean bird, not prone to “doing their business” while they are flying. So Jim can’t blame any of Mike’s pigeons for any droppings on the vehicles in his driveway!
A pair of pigeons will breed six times a year. A racing pigeon can reach speeds of 65 mph. If you’d like to learn more about homing pigeons, contact Mike.
