To the editor:
Rep. Mike Michaud voted for a 1,390-page cap and trade bill on Friday, June 26 which he did not take the trouble to read. Nor did Rep. Pingree or likely any of his other colleagues. Do you doubt me? Find yourself a volume of the Encyclopedia Brittanica and one of Tom Clancy’s novels and try reading them through from end-to-end. Then try to assimilate what you have read. You will doubt me no more.
If you had called his office on June 25 you would have been told that your representative had not yet made up his mind. At 3 a.m. the following day a 310-page amendment was added to the bill. That evening he voted “yes” and immediately thereafter issued a statement praising the benefits we can all expect from a bill he has not read.
The conservative Heritage Foundation and the liberal Brookings Institute agree that it is going to produce a serious reduction in the nation’s gross domestic product, a loss of jobs and an increase in our trade deficit. The 2nd District (us) stands to lose nearly 4,000 jobs, and energy prices will spike again. Google and google again to see for yourself.
If you run into our representative next year you can be assured of a winsome smile and a warm hand-shake. These preliminaries completed you might ask him to explain this passage: “The Appraisal Subcommittee shall, in consultation with the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, the Federal National Mortgage Association, and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, establish specific guidelines for appraising off- and on-grid photovoltaic measures for compliance with the appraisal standards.”
His response is sure to be entertaining.
