Girl Scout memorabilia sought for Mapleton display

Scout news

Were you a Girl Scout in your younger years? Was your daughter, niece, or granddaughter a Girl Scout?

If you have been hanging on to old Girl Scout uniforms, handbooks, or other items from former Scouting years, don’t throw them out! Please contact Jennifer Buzza (at the information below) so your donations can be added to the Girl Scout Memorabilia display at the Haystack Historical Society Museum. If necessary, arrangements can be made to pick up your donations. If you missed an opportunity to visit the museum during the Mapleton Daze weekend, the museum does have summer hours. Watch this column for more details!

50th Anniversary Celebration

There will be a reception honoring the 50th wedding anniversary of Castle Hill residents Richard and Pat Watt this Saturday, July 11 from 5-10 p.m. at the Castle Hill Grange Hall. Their family is encouraging the couple’s friends and neighbors to attend this celebration.

Adult Rec Activities

There are some new adult activities being offered this summer for residents of the community! Each morning at 9 a.m., senior citizens (as well as others) are invited to meet upstairs at the Lion’s Hall for an hour of indoor walking. Following at 10 a.m., adults will be given the opportunity to use the Hall’s facilities to enjoy some craft time, listen to music or play games. All activities are free! Please contact Rec Director Melanie Mowbray at 551-5752 for more information.

Little Known Holidays

Did you know that July 10 is known as Teddy Bear’s Picnic Day? On the 10th, grab your favorite teddy bear (regardless of your age!), invite your friends over and have a picnic lunch! If it’s rainy (which isn’t unlikely this summer), have a picnic inside!
According to about.com, July 11 is Cheer Up the Lonely Day. This day is an opportunity to make a lonely person happy. Any time you can make someone happy, you have helped beyond measure. Lonely people have few friends and loved ones to surround themselves with. Maybe they have lost loved ones over the years. Maybe they are elderly. Maybe they see people on an infrequent basis. Mark your calendar on July 11th and spend time cheering up someone you know that may be lonely. When you visit, bring a bouquet of flowers. When you leave, give a big hug and let them know you enjoyed the stay. Sending cards, an e-mail or making a phone call is a great idea, too. Do you know a friend or neighbor that might need some cheering up?

Vacation Bible School

This year’s community Vacation Bible School, entitled “Back in Time,” will be at the Mapleton United Baptist Church from July 20-24 from 12:30-3 p.m. This exciting time travel expedition, led once again by Josh and Melanie Duncan, is one you don’t want to miss! Bible School will travel back in time and visit three of the world’s most important events. All children from ages four and up are invited for lots of fun games, crafts, and some prizes, too! For more information, please call 764-0398.

Castle Hill Grange Hall Preservation Society

The Society has voted to offer a couple’s lifetime membership for $150. If two people from the same family would like to join, this option would save $50, rather than purchasing one lifetime membership for $100.
The Grange Hall is available for rent May 1-Nov. 1. Please contact any member if you are interested in renting the hall for your event. The Society meets one night a month from February through November and welcomes new members. Please consider helping the Society preserve a piece of local history.

Mapleton United Methodist Church Luncheon

The United Methodist Church luncheon will be held Friday, July 10 at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend.

Haystack Historical Society

The Haystack Historical Society wishes to thank all of the people who came to visit our museum and enjoy our homemade pie and ice cream.  Also, a special thanks goes to those people who made our pies and ice cream and to all of the volunteers who helped serve and clean up. The day was a great success.
Starting July 11, we will be having a garage sale in the east wing of the museum. The garage sale will continue through July and August every Saturday that the museum is open. Our summer hours are on Saturdays July 11 to August 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Our next monthly meeting will be July 27 at 7 p.m. at the museum.
