The 17th annual Island Falls Summerfest 5K Run and 4K Walk will be held Saturday, Aug. 1 with a 9 a.m. start and the half mile race for ages 9 and under will begin at 8:45 a.m.
Runners and walkers will gather at the Island Falls Municipal Building (Exit 276 off I-95) and the course will cover roads — paved and gravel – with a water station positioned at the halfway point. Preregistration is $10 and registration on race day is $12. Proceeds will be split between the AGAPE Food Pantry and Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
Race categories are 14 and under; 15-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69 and 70 and over. Refreshments of water, watermelon and more will be served.
The top overall male and female finishers in the run and walk, along with the first to finish in each category will receive homemade pies. The winners receiving their choice of dozens and dozens of delicious homemade pies is one reason this race is such a draw. There will also be random drawings for over 40 door prizes, as well.
A big hit with the run/walk is the homemade pie auction held after the race, around 10:30 a.m. Most of the best cooks in the area, according to Race Director John Walker, look forward each year to making a pie or two for this, maybe the County’s largest, running/walking event.
This year, the course is slightly different, as the field that runners have run through has been altered by roads and a potential subdivision … so for those that are used to running over and dodging the tree roots, that will be no more.
Last year, the race drew 89 participants (92 the prior year), with Alfred Hanscom of Limestone and Angela Ewings of Littleton finishing as overall winners. In the 4K walk, Gabrielle DeCrescenzo of Cherry Hill, NJ won by one second over Candace Rupley of Island Falls and just two seconds over Tracy Willigar of Bangor. The first to cross in the male category was 9-year old Thomas Prescott of Island Falls.
The half-mile run had a field of 10 youngsters, with Paige MacKinnon, age 8, of Brunswick winning, followed by her brother, Colin, age 5.
