If you haven’t noticed the flower boxes on the windows of Cary Library on Main Street or the flower beds around the building, take a look next time you are driving by. Thanks to Tom and Sally Callnan of New Limerick, owners of Callnans Greenhouse, there is lots of color to brighten up this historic landmark.
The Callnans generously donated the flowers for the library window boxes and several other flower gardens around the library and the town this summer. Whatever areas needed some color, the Callnans filled their truck with a variety of plants and worked their magic turning neglected boxes and flowerbeds into spaces full of color.
In 2003, a group of library patrons established the Helen K. Atchison Pink Geranium and Garden Society. This fund was created to maintain the flower boxes and some of the flower gardens around the building. Atchison, the librarian from 1955 until 1981, and now living in Massachusetts loved pink and always planted the six window boxes with pink geraniums for the summer season.
After she retired, the boxes were not always planted until the society took over the project. Last year, Orville Boutilier donated the flowers for the project and this year, the Callnans graciously offered to do the planting.
If you would like to contribute to this fund please send your donations to the Atchison Pink Geranium and Garden Society, 107 Main Street, Houlton, ME. 04730.
