Phil Pelletier of Presque Isle charged back from being down seven strokes entering the final 36 holes to take first place in the 26th annual Cary Classic Benefit Golf Tournament, held at Caribou Country Club July 11 and 12.
The tourney featured a field of 95 golfers, with proceeds benefiting the new mammography center at Cary Medical Center.
Pelletier shot a blistering 70 Sunday, which included an eagle on hole No. 4, to defeat last year’s tourney champion and seven-time winner Herrick Hanson of Perth-Andover, New Brunswick by a stroke. Mike Hersey of Presque Isle, the leader by three strokes following Saturday’s round, ended up four strokes back.
Emily Jose of Caribou was able to hold off last year’s winner Betty Deveau for the win in the ladies division. Jose led by seven strokes after Saturday, but Deveau fought back with an 82 on Sunday to get to within one. Vi Kemp of Palmyra, a past Cary Classic champion, was four behind Jose for third place.
