Tryout dates for SAD 1 all sports announced

    SAD 1 is holding tryouts for its high school and middle school fall sports teams beginning in early August. 

    Student-athletes are not allowed to try out for any sport unless they are cleared by the SAD 1 Health Office. Call 764-1805 or 764-6507 for more information.
    Girls JV and varsity soccer tryouts will take place beginning Aug. 3 at the Johnson Athletic Complex from 4-6 p.m. Boys JV and varsity soccer tryouts will be held the same day from 6-8 p.m., also at the Johnson Athletic Complex.
    Girls and boys cross country running tryouts will begin Aug. 10 at 3 p.m. at Presque Isle High School. Varsity golf tryouts are set for Aug. 17 at 3 p.m. at Presque Isle Country Club. Varsity fall cheering tryouts take place Aug. 17 from 6-8 p.m. at the PIHS upper gym.
    Middle school girls soccer tryouts begin Aug. 10 from 1-3 p.m. at the Johnson Athletic Complex. Boys tryouts are held from 8-10 a.m. that same day.
    Boys and girls cross country running tryouts for middle school-level students will be held beginning Aug. 17 from 3-4 p.m. at the Johnson Athletic Complex.

Girls hoop tourney slated this weekend

    The fifth annual Girls “County” Basketball Shootout will be held Friday and Saturday in Fort Fairfield. The tournament, sponsored by Pepsi Bottling Group, consists of 16 teams from around Aroostook County, the state and Canada that will play a round robin format before going to semi-final and final action.
    Teams from Woodland, Shead, Penobscot Valley, Narragaugus, Stearns, Hodgdon, Central Aroostook, Washburn, Fort Kent, Madawaska, Southern Aroostook, Greater Houlton Christian Academy, Limestone, Easton and Fort Fairfield will compete for the title.
    Games are open to the public and will be held at Fort Fairifeld High School and Fort Fairfield Community Center beginning on Friday at noon. Admission is $5 per person, which is good for all games on both days.

Football meeting tonight at UMPI

    Aroostook Football is kicking off its seventh season with registration for interested players in Presque Isle, Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Mars Hill, Washburn, Limestone and Ashland.
    Prospective players who will be in high school this fall will meet tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Weiden Auditorium on the University of Maine at Presque Isle campus.  
    “These meeting is important for giving players and their parents a chance to meet the coaches and ask questions about the program,” said Stu Wyckoff, high school program administrator. “This is also the time when proper fitting (essential to safety) of helmets and shoulder pads will be done in order to assure having equipment available for every player when the season begins.”
    Those unable to attend this meeting, in order to make arrangements to be fit for a uniform, need to contact Wyckoff at 764-7651.

Men’s softball

    The Class E state men’s softball tournament will be held in Caribou Friday through Sunday. The top teams will advance to the national tourney in Virginia later this summer. For more information, please contact Mike Patenaude at 764-6613.
