Summerfest starts Friday in Island Falls

The 2009 Island Falls Summerfest begins this Friday, July 24 with the theme —children’s storybook characters. It runs through Sunday, Aug. 2 when a parade will honor the town’s oldest citizens Sam Sewall and Clara Hathaway. A car show will be near the baseball field after the parade  and is being sponsored by Northern Katahdin Valley Region Chamber of Commerce.
Returning events this year will be Ms. Pageant with two categories for men — 17 years and under and 18 years and older. Judging will be on best hair, best walk, best outfit and best overall. Men are encouraged to enter. There will also be a photo contest and a cake contest. All photos must have the entrant’s name and phone number on the back of the picture and be turned in by 4 p.m., July 24th to the Town Office or Katahdin Library.
Cakes to be entered in the contest, should be dropped off, Sunday, Aug. 2nd from 8-10 a.m. at the Municipal Building Meeting Room. The decorating theme is children’s storybook characters.
The auction will be returning, as well, since several people have expressed interest in seeing it again. The Island Falls Playground Committee has decided to give it a try with all proceeds going to the local playground account. The expectation is that someday it will help purchase new playground equipment in memory of Galen Porter who donated land where the playground is located. Several local businessmen in the area have agreed to donate their time to help install equipment which will cut costs. Donations, except clothing, are welcome and interested people can call 463-2263.
Some first-time events that will be held are: a barber shop performance by the Maine-ly Music Chorus, family entertainment by Wendell Hudson and Supreme Court Jester-Adrian Hagerstrom of Baptist Park, bridge card games, outdoor rollerblading/dance for kids and family, Sewall House Yoga Retreat’s introduction to Yoga (ages 3-12; call to register.), plant and book swaps, Brave Heart’s open house, this ‘n that booths and a trade show in the gym.
Two benefit events are planned July 25th for Josh Rockwell, who represented the Island Falls Fire Dept. in the Houlton Fair Demolition Derby. Rockwell’s car caught fire and he is recovering from third degree burns in Portland after having skin graft surgery on his arm. A breakfast is being sponsored by the Island Falls Free Wheeler ATV Club and will be held at the Fish ‘N Game Club. Later, an adult dance, planned by family and friends at the Municipal Building, for adults 21 and over, will have Joey White as DJ. Both events are $5 per person; donations will be accepted.
Several businesses are holding Customer Appreciation Days and sponsoring events throughout the week. The Rec. Dept. is planning a raffle, bounce house, cotton candy, snow cones, hot dogs and other festival food along with Green Valley Association’s food. Green Valley will also have a 50/50 raffle.
For more information, see the events schedule in this paper, brochures at local businesses and the Island Falls Town Office, or call Island Falls Rec. Director Ruth Frazier at 463-2263.
