‘College Info Night’ Monday

HOULTON — Northern Maine Community College in collaboration with the SAD 29 and 70 Adult Education program will host a College Info Night at the Houlton Higher Education Center on Monday, Aug. 10, from 5-7:30 p.m.  The informational session is designed to help those impacted by the downturn in the economy, as well as to inform area residents interested in learning about their options for higher education and training in the region.
Specifically, Info Night will provide attendees the opportunity to learn more about NMCC and the various certificate and associate degree programs and courses offered on both the Presque Isle campus and locally at the Houlton Higher Education Center.
“College Info Night is a great opportunity for people in the southern Aroostook area to meet and ask questions of people from the Presque Isle campus. Here at the Houlton Higher Education Center, we help people every day with their college questions, but it is really reassuring and empowering for the prospective student to meet face to face with admissions and student services staff from the main campus,” said Otis Smith, NMCC Houlton center coordinator and director of SAD 29/70 Adult Education. “I recommend anyone who has college admissions questions to stop by on Monday evening, Aug. 10.”
Participants will be able to learn more about financing their education and about financial aid that is available to many students.  A recent cost comparison affirmed that NMCC offers the lowest public higher education tuition rates in the state of Maine at $84 per credit hour.
As a further incentive, NMCC will waive the standard application fee for individuals who attend the Info Nights and apply for a specific program of study. Registration fees will be waived for those who do not enroll in a program but sign up for individual courses.

ON HER WAY — Kim Wright of New Limerick, seen here with Houlton Higher Education Center Coordinator Otis Smith, said Info Night helped her plan a career in medical office administration.

Kim Wright of New Limerick, who visited NMCC’s Info Night at the Houlton Higher Education Center last year, recently completed her first year of study at the college, taking courses at both the Houlton center and on the Presque Isle campus.  She will graduate with an associate’s degree.
“When I decided to go back to school, I didn't know where to begin or what would be involved in getting started. The NMCC Info Night last year answered all the questions that I had and helped me enroll in the Medical Office Administration program,” said Wright. “They took the time and really cared about making the process a pleasant experience.”
The College Info Nights are tailored to each individual who attends. Participants can walk in at any time between 5 and 7:30 p.m. for a one-on-one session with an NMCC representative.
