Chris Peverada of Hampden and Britta Fortson of Jacksonville, Fla. were victorious in the County Open Half Marathon held in Island Falls Aug. 8. Under sunny skies, each runner blitzed the 13.1 miles in super times of 1:13:55 and 1:27:07, respectively. In all, 48 runners completed the scenic route and another 19 competed in the relay portion.
Finishing in the second spots for male and female participants were Joe Capehart of Bangor and Marie Strouse of Caribou in times of 1:18:42 and 1:32:19, respectively. Number three overall were Jeff Ashby of Fort Fairfield and Samantha McToush of Bangor in times of 1:19:44 and 1:35:05.
The overall top-10 for individuals included: Perverada, Capehart, Ashby, Alfred Hanscom of Presque Isle, 1:21:42; Marco Gudino of Wilton, 1:21:51; Corey Park of Presque Isle, 1:22:30; Fortson; Peter Lodge of Bangor, 1:27:07; Thomas Beckum of Caribou, 1:28:10; and Rick Durgin of Westbrook, 1:30:03.
There were six teams in the relay portion of the race. The first team to cross the finish line was the ‘Sleep Heads’ from Caribou in a time of 1:37:08. The team consisted of Leo and Kelly Kashian, Tyler Strid and Dillon Beckum.
Every participant received a door prize as more than $2,000 in gift certificates/gifts were donated by area businesses. The County Open Half Marathon/Relay is a fund-raiser for Houlton Regional Health Foundation.
