The Easton girls soccer team continue to roll through their season as the Bears played three more games, putting the team already past the halfway point on the season. Easton moved above the .500 mark Monday night with a big win over Limestone-Maine School of Science and Mathematics. It marked the second time in a week that the Bears defeated the Eagles.
In contrast, Caribou, playing in just its second game of the year, fell for the first time on the season Friday with a 1-0 loss to Fort Kent. Presque Isle has yet to play a game as the Wildcats open their season Wednesday at Caribou.
The following is a recap of the past week’s games.
Easton 3, Limestone-MSSM 2 — At Limestone Monday, the Bears’ Carla Halverson booted three goals to lift Easton to the road win over Limestone-MSSM. Meghan Frank added an assist for Easton (4-3-1).
Bethany Berry and Jasmine Cote each had one goal for the Eagles (1-3-1).
Taylor Burtt had 20 saves on 23 shots for Easton, while Audra Kirk stopped 10 of 14 shots for the Eagles.
Ashland 1, Washburn 0 — At Washburn Friday, the Hornets remained perfect on the young season with a shutout victory over Washburn. Kayla Cote tallied the lone goal, her second on the season, off a pass from Jessica Jimmo with 22:40 remaining in the first half.
Taylor Baker had eight saves on 14 shots for Ashland (2-0), while sisters Meghan and Rayah Saucier combined for 10 saves on 14 shots for Washburn (0-2-3).
Ashland suffered a blow to its squad early in Friday’s game went stopper Whitney Donovan took a hit to the head and was unable to return.
“We didn’t want to take any chances with Whitney,” Ashland coach Peter Belskis said. “We had to make some adjustments to her loss and it took us out of our game for a little bit. Washburn is a scrappy team, so we had to take advantage of the opportunities when he got them.”
Washburn also had to deal with a short bench as the Beavers had just one player in reserve due to injuries in previous games. Washburn coach Marcie Barbarula said she was not sure when or if she would be back to full strength this season.
“We did our best to keep rotating the girls in and out,” Barbarula said. “We switched the positions up as well to give the girls some breaks.”
Scoring has been somewhat of a problem for Washburn of late. In their past five games, the Beavers have mustered just one goal.
Central Aroostook 2, Wisdom 0 — At St. Agatha Friday, Ashley Estabrook and Viki McIntyre each scored solo goals to lift the Panthers (3-3-1) to victory. Brittani Mosher had an assist in the game. Nashalli Parks had five save on 17 shots, for the Panthers, while Suzie Collins had 16 saves on 22 shots for Wisdom.
Southern Aroostook 5, Easton 0 — At Easton Friday, the Bears found themselves on the opposite end of a 5-0 shutout just one day after beating Hodgdon 5-0. Southern Aroostook’s Evangeline Goodall scored three goals, while Liz Goodall and Kimberly Pratt each added solo goals for the Warriors.
Emily Cummings had eight saves on 12 shots, while Burtt had 17 saves on 38 shots for the Bears.
Easton 5, Hodgdon 0 — At Easton Thursday, Ariana Babineau and Halvorson each booted in two goals to pace Easton to victory over the visiting Hawks of Hodgdon. Samantha Fuller also had a goal and an assist for the Bears. Abigail Poole, Brooke Hammond, Mindy Desmond and Halvorson also had one assist each.
Easton’s Burtt stopped eight of 10 shots in goal, while Emily Jurson had 19 saves on 43 shots for Hodgdon.
Southern Aroostook 6, Central Aroostook 0 — At Mars Hill Wednesday, the Warriors were out in force as they romped to a lop-sided win over the host Panthers. Southern Aroostook held a commanding 28-6 advantage in shots, and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
“Overall, it was a case of the defending state champs [SAHS] coming out ready to play and our girls playing very flat,” CAHS coach Dave Collins said. “[It] seemed like they were defeated before we even started the game. [It] would have been nice to see us play like we played in Limestone the other night, I’m sure it would have been a much closer game.”
L. Goodall, Pratt and E. Goodall all scored a pair of goals to lead Southern Aroostook. Lauren McGary and Kaitlyn Sommers both had one assist.
Estabrook, Parks and MacKenzie Hatt all saw time in the net for Central Aroostook. The trio combined for nine saves. Emily Cummings had two saves in goal for the Warriors.
Van Buren 2, Washburn 0 — At Van Buren Wednesday, Crusader Shawna LaPointe scored the first goal assisted by Kristi Learnard. Haley Lizotte scored the second Crusader goal assisted by Chantal Rioux. That proved to be all the scoring Van Buren would need for the shutout win.
Ashlie Wilson had six saves on eight shots for Van Buren, while Washburn’s Meghan and Rayah Saucier combined for 12 saves on 18 shots.
Easton 2, Limestone/MSSM 1 — At Easton Tuesday, neither team was able to break the scoring ice in the first half, resulting in a scoreless stalemate at the break. All that changed in the second half, as Easton took a 2-0 lead on goals by Halvorson and Frank. Halvorson’s goal was assisted by Babineau.
Victoria St. Pierre scored with 12 minutes remaining for the Eagles, but it was not enough as Easton emerged victorious. Burtt made 12 saves on 17 shots for the Bears.
