Kicking Bear Camp encourages kids to head outdoors

Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 a.m. The special speaker was Whitnie Bradbury. She showed a slide show and spoke about the Kicking Bear Camp held in Bridgewater on Aug. 14 and 15.

There were around 50 kids that attended, plus many chaperones. They all enjoyed the experience. Friday afternoon and evening the group enjoyed a slip ‘n slide, water balloon toss, and tug-of-war. After dinner, they enjoyed a bonfire.
Saturday they learned how to shoot a bow, with many interesting targets, including bears, turkeys, a tiger and an alligator! There were two sizes of bows, so the kids were able to shoot with the correct size. They were very accurate!
Kicking Bear founder Ray Howell gave his testimony and spoke of how the Lord led him to start this organization. It is designed to introduce kids to outdoor activities and to help the organizers to identify those involved that may need a mentor.
If you want to help make a difference in a child’s life, check out www.kickingbear.org to see how you can be involved next year when the camp is held again.

Hearts Ranch is an outreach of the non-profit social service agency The Northern Lighthouse Inc. Home to six miniature Shetland ponies, goats, sheep, cats and chickens, the ranch provides an atmosphere where children can learn and grow in a natural environment. Operating solely on donations, sponsors and grant funding, the ranch provides a no-cost service to children in need in Aroostook County. Please join us on Sept. 12 to help support this much-needed program. Admission is free; tickets will be on sale to play a variety of carnival games. Also added this year is “Pass a hat Karaoke,” puppet shows and a Maine State Police K-9 demonstration. This should be lots of fun for the whole family! Baked potato bar, hotdogs and nachos will be on sale throughout the day, as well as  a table with baked goods.
“This is the biggest fund-raiser that the ranch hosts all year, and we are hoping for a great turnout. Last year, over 350 people were in attendance,” reports Tami Cote, ranch administrator.
Following the carnival, from 4-6 p.m. at the East Ridge Union Church, there will be a spaghetti supper. Cost will be $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12; this will include spaghetti, salad, garlic bread and pie. For more information about the carnival or the ranch, visit www.healingheartsranch.org.
