Kiwanis meeting
On Tuesday, Sept. 1, the Easton Kiwanis held their regular board meeting with a supper of chop suey, salad, garlic bread and dessert. Keith Richardson said the blessing before the meal was enjoyed. President Mike Allen opened the meeting with a short report on the Field Days and Northern Maine Fair booths, and then turned the meeting over to Board Chairman Barbara Blackstone.

The treasurer’s report was given by Treasurer Loris Allen, who stated that she had paid the dues and reported on expenditures and amounts made at the Easton Field Days and the Northern Maine Fair. She also reported that she had given a check to the Easton Jr/Sr. High School for the Student of the Month awards. The Easton Kiwanis donated $15 in the form of a gift certificate to the mall to those students picked as Student of the Month.
Esther Richardson reported that the Key Club had started to hold their meetings again since school has started up. Harold Clark reported the Friend’s Helping Friends Food Cupboard was running well and that they now have five freezers for the frozen items they receive. Bernard Hussey also reported on the work of re-packing that he had recently done at the cupboard. The two men were given an appreciative handshake for the work they have done.
Mike read a letter from the school emergency cause fund asking for a donation to this cause which helps school children in need of things to attend school. It was voted to donate $200 to Easton schools instead of the cause.
Mike Cyr and Mike and Loris Allen were given a hand for all the work they did at the fair and at other times. They said they enjoyed doing it.
It was voted to give Monica Cilley and Sandra Boxwell, who are suffering ill health, each a $50 gas card and the same for a grocery gift card.
Mike reported that he was selling this coming year’s calendar ads. It is also time to get out to sell those calendars. He said if there is anyone who is not contacted and wants a calendar, to call Loris at 488-6111. Plans are in the works for a second annual Hunter’s Breakfast on Nov. 7 from 5 to 8:30 a.m.
It was also brought up by the board chairman that they might entertain the governor later this year if the club wanted to do it. The meeting was adjourned.
Kiwanis Club
President of Easton’s Kiwanis Club, Mike Allen, and his wife, Loris, held their annual chicken and steak cookout at their home for the “After the Fair” helpers and other members of the Kiwanis and their spouses, on Tuesday, Aug. 18. Some members of the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club also attended. Loris manned the kitchen, as hot as the day was, cooking potatoes, peas and dessert. Dana Dickinson and Jim Kennedy took over the grilling of the steak and chicken. Keith Richardson started the meal off with the blessing. Twenty-three people enjoyed the meal and fellowship. After dinner, Mike Allen passed out certificates of appreciation to several members and others who helped out in the Easton Field Days and the Northern Maine Fair booths that the Easton Kiwanis had on site. He also told them they had not done as well on Field Days this year, but they had done better at the fair. A good time was had by all.

60th birthday party
Vaughn Carter recently celebrated his 60th birthday with a cookout at his home, put on by his wife, Cheryl, and family. His son, Travis, manned the grill and the theme, as you might guess, was Harley Davidson motorcycle, with a cake decorated with a bike on it and lots of Harley gifts. Those attending were: Travis, his wife Sheri and their kids Kody and Kylee; Vaughn’s daughter, Julie Nadeau, her husband Mat, and children Cole and Callie; a son, Troy, his wife Lori and their children Kayla and Logan, of Presque Isle; Vaughn’s mother and father, Eldora and Clair Carter; and from Presque Isle, a brother-in-law, Donny Rooney and his wife Debbie, and Vaughn’s friends, Terry and Shirley Howlett.
Visiting
Clair and Eldora Carter recently returned home from a trip to Scarborough where they were able to wish their grandson, Jeremy Carter, the best before he took off for George Washington University in Washington, D.C. They had lunch on Sunday with another son, Wendall, and his family, in Saco, to send another son, Kyle, with their best wishes, off to the University of Maine at Orono. While in Scarborough at Dana’s, they were visited by another son, Michael, and Beth, of Portland, and Corey and Cindy MacDonald, of Standish. The Carters enjoyed the hot weather with cooling-off dips in the pool. On their way to Scarborough, they stopped overnight with Eldora’s brother, Darrrell Porter, and his wife, Norma, in Gardiner, and were pleased to find that a cousin of Eldora’s, Nadine Bates and her husband Hollis, of Lewiston, were already there for an afternoon visit. They all enjoyed supper together and catching up on family news.
Visits
Sgt. 1st Class Jay Winger recently spent two weeks with his parents, Mike and Loris Allen, and his wife, Ana, who arrived in Easton several days before he did. Jay has been stationed in Afghanistan and has returned there to finish his tour. Ana stayed on with the Allens for a few days longer before returning to their home outside of Fort Sill, Okla.
Easton PTO
The Easton PTO held its first meeting of the new school year. They want everyone to know that they still have cookbooks left from last year and they are selling them for $7 for one or $10 for two. You can pick these up at the Easton Elementary School. They are also collecting Box Tops. They are also collecting cell phones and ink cartridges. If you have any of these, you can drop them off at the Easton Elementary School anytime. They are also in desperate need of clean coffee cans and they have to be in good shape. They are doing the cookie sale again in December. Thanks to all of you who can help us out.
