Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 6:30 a.m. The special speaker was Patricia Scull, port director for the Van Buren Port of Entry. After spending 10 years in the Air Force, she joined the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in 1992, working on the Maine border.  She spoke about the duties of those that work at the ports of entry.
Since the inception of Customs in 1789, there are now over 300 official ports of entry in the United States. On a typical day, they process over 1.9 million passengers and pedestrians; 70,451 trucks, rail and sea containers; and process $90.4 million in fees, duties and tariffs. They also apprehend many illegal immigrants and criminals, as well as seize narcotics, illegal agricultural items and pests.
There are 5,000 miles of border between the U.S. and Canada, and 1,900 miles between the U.S. and Mexico. The agency has over 40,000 agents and specialists in many capacities. They train continually throughout the year, taking around 26 courses each year.
The Houlton port has authority over 215 miles of border, with 152 officers. Each new hire trains for around nine months before becoming an officer.      Through the use of computers, they are able to know what type of individual or vehicle to take a closer look at. By keeping records of what types of vehicles have been used in the past to attempt to bring drugs, etc., into the United States, the CBP will take a closer look at that type of vehicle when they come across the border.
