School Open House
The Mapleton Elementary School will be hosting an Open House Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. Families of MES students are encouraged to attend. This is an opportunity to meet the faculty and staff of the school, especially those involved in educating your child(ren) this school year! If you have yet to do so, this would also be a great chance to meet new Principal Dan Duprey. The evening will begin with informal classroom visits, and then at 7 p.m. there will be a brief informational meeting in the cafeteria. The Mapleton Parent Organization is looking for more parent volunteers to assist with their activities this year. The group will be planning their first new event of the school year for mid-October. Volunteers will be needed in this project.
Supper & Auction
The Haystack Historical Society will be having their annual fall supper and auction Saturday, Sept. 12. The meal will include the Society’s famous baked ham, baked beans, homemade potato salad, rolls, with pumpkin and apple pie for dessert. Coffee, water and soda will also be served. The supper is $7 for adults and $3 for children under 12. The meal will be served from 4:30-6 p.m. The auction will start promptly at 6:30 p.m. with many great items to bid on. Auctioneer for the evening will be Mapleton’s own Ron Leonard.
Making a Change
I recently read an announcement in the September issue of “Family Fun” magazine promoting Disney’s “Friends for Change: Project Green.” This is a new program (disney.com/friendsforchange) encouraging kids to help the environment by making small changes in their daily habits. Kids who go online and pledge to take action – to unplug their cell phone charger, for example, or organize a local carpool with their friends (whatever creative idea they can think of) – can vote to decide how Disney will donate $1 million to charitable environmental projects.
On Sept. 12, Friends For Change is asking kids and their families around the world to take a “power shower” – reducing their shower time by two minutes. According to the article, cutting just two minutes from a shower can save 10 gallons of water. Is your family up for the challenge to make a change?
Little Known Holidays
According to grandparents-day.com, the founder of National Grandparents Day was Marian McQuade, a housewife from Fayette County, W.Va. “Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to encourage grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.” President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
Marian McQuade passed away last fall at the age of 91. She was the proud grandmother of 43 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. An excerpt from her obituary read, the Grandparents Day proclamation reads (in part): “Grandparents are our continuing tie to the near-past, to events and beliefs and experiences that so strongly affect our lives and the world around us. Whether they are our own or surrogate grandparents who fill some of the gaps in our mobile society, our senior generation also provides our society a link to our national heritage and traditions.” The last line in her obituary read, “As Marian always said, ‘Make every day Grandparents Day.’” This year, Grandparents Day will be celebrated Sunday, Sept. 13.
Mapleton Daze Meeting
The Mapleton Daze Committee met last week and has elected officers for the upcoming year. Julie (Sawyer) Powers was elected chair of the committee. The upcoming calendar sales fund-raiser was discussed and volunteers will be contacting several in the community to purchase a birthday calendar. For those that may not be familiar with the committee’s calendars, here is a quick description. Calendars can be purchased for $7 each, which allows each customer five listings. These listings can be birthdays or anniversaries of family members or friends, or birthday listings in memory of those that have passed. Additional listings can be purchased for 50 each. The committee will be having a special meeting Monday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. to turn in their calendar orders. If you would like to place an order and have not been contacted, please e-mail Julie at greenbay04favre@yahoo.com or call 540-1097. Volunteers are always welcome to attend the meetings!

The Grange Hall is available for rent May 1-Nov. 1. Please contact any member if you are interested in renting the hall for your event.
