Family hosts party
Roger Hewitt turned 60 years old on Monday, Sept. 14, and his family wasn’t going to let it go unnoticed! They put on a barbecue complete with beans, hotdogs and burgers on the grill and a buffet line of salads and many other treats for all to enjoy over the weekend.
His daughter, Jodale, was the main coordinator for the event, and his boys, Donnie and Roger Jr., outdid themselves with their skills at the grill!
Over 100 of Roger’s friends, family, co-workers and their spouses attended the event held at the Trailrunners Snowmobile clubhouse. The tables were full of guests sharing memories and an impressive collage of photos made by his niece, Joanna Pike, was placed at the entrance showing Roger throughout his early childhood days, teenage years, military service, young father (with black hair!) and current photos.
Jodale and others cut and served a birthday cake and the group sang “Happy Birthday” to Roger. After he blew the candles out and the flames were gone, Roger’s grandson, Mitchell Hewitt, thought this was not a good thing and ran directly to his grampy in dismay.
Leo Long, a special friend from the Colby days, talked about childhood days and serving together in the military. The men are still best friends today. Jodale’s good friend Amy Allen also told about what she remembered about Roger while growing up near the Hewitt home. His wife, JoAnne, talked about how they met through a family member and neither thought they “belonged” together, but fate won out and the two eventually married. There was a guest book for all to sign, and a very special journal was circulated for all the guests to put down whatever they chose for Roger to read later. This will likely be a special gift in itself for Roger and his family. His family got him fun gifts including a cane, complete with a bicycle horn and rear view mirror for use in his nearing senior years; and his children gave him a big bucket of mixed coins, complete with rolls to put them in, figuring it will keep him occupied in the evenings. Roger also received many gift cards, certificates and gifts during the afternoon, but likely the best gift of all was the friendship shared by all with this quiet and special man.

Troop thanks benefactors
Boy Scout Troop 177 invited two special guests to their August Court of Honor, held at their campsite. Willie and Judy Drost attended and were recognized with sincere thanks, presented with a plaque for all they have done for Troop 177. A few years ago, the couple donated a 15-and-one-half-acre piece of woods land located on Scout Drive, just off the Everett Road in Washburn, to the troop. This land now houses the troop’s campsite and camp building, as well as the large wood area and will ensure that scouting remains a strong program in Washburn for years to come.
Willie and Judy continue to support the troop by keeping them supplied with fresh spring water and keeping a protective and watchful eye on the camp and grounds.
Even though Willie and Judy were guests of the troop during the meeting and potluck dinner, Willie made a large batch of his famous delicious rolls for the event, which was definitely not turned away by the boys or their leaders!
The Drosts were presented with a special thank-you plaque from the North Star District Boy Scouts of America for their extra special support of Boy Scout Troop 177.
