PRESQUE ISLE — Police are investigating a burglary involving the theft of construction material that had been designated for the reconstruction of the Presque Isle Snowmobile Club, marking another setback for the organization whose clubhouse was destroyed by fire in January of this year. The Presque Isle Police Department were contacted at around 1:55 p.m. on Sept. 8 by club representative Barry Bartley requesting they respond to the club’s property just off the State Park Rd. The caller indicated several thousand dollars’ worth of log home building materials had been stolen.
Sgt. Mark Barnes and Officer Kevin Reed responded.
According to the police log, club members reported a variety of construction materials, including windows, destined for construction of the club’s new clubhouse, had been stored in a shed with the trail groomers. When club members checked the shed on Sept. 8, they discovered several items missing.
Police did not have an exact dollar amount on the value of the items stolen but confirmed it was in the thousands.
Police checked the shed for clues but found no sign of forced entry, leading them to believe a key may have been used.
Items missing included special-order windows from Ward Cedar Log Homes, estimated to be valued in the thousands, according to a company official.
The PIPD is working with club members to determine who may have had access to a key.
The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the PIPD at 764-4476.
