‘Cat girls come back for another win, Ashland boys take pair

    Ashland girls 3, Katahdin 0 — At Presque Isle Monday, Hornet Brooke LaBelle had two goals and an assist for Ashland (8-2). Macie Pelkey also scored a goal.
    Taylor Baker faced just two shots, stopping both. Michayla Patterson had 15 saves on 23 shots for Katahdin.     Southern Aroostook girls 2, Ashland 0 — At Island Falls Sept. 23, the Hornets (7-2) fell for the second time on the year to undefeated Southern Aroostook (11-0). Southern Aroostook is the only squad to best Ashland on the pitch this season.
    Presque Isle girls 3, Old Town 2 (2 OT) — At Old Town Saturday, Brooke Long-Postell scored on a free kick about one minute into the second overtime to break a 2-2 stalemate. Long-Postell’s shot eluded Old Town goalie Ashley Abbott preserving the unbeaten season for the Wildcats (8-0).
    Chelsea Nickerson and Kayla Richards each scored a goal during regulation. Katie Deshane and Sam McLaughlin each scored a goal for Old Town.
    Kelsey Park stopped eight of 10 shots, while Abbott made 11 saves on 20 shots for the Coyotes (6-2).
    “I think we are going to change our names to the ‘Cardiac Kids’” said Presque Isle coach Ralph Michaud. “We basically had the same scenario as the John Bapst game last Monday.”
    Ashland boys 6, Katahdin 1 – At Presque Isle Monday, the Hornets used a Casey Cobb hat trick and two goals and two assists from Kenny Tarr in the victory over the Cougars which avenged a 2-1 loss a week earlier.
    Cobb also posted an assist, while Lucas Hafford netted a goal. Bobby Gardner had 12 saves on 17 shots in goal for the Hornets.
    Presque Isle boys 3, Old Town 1 – At Old Town Saturday, the Wildcats made it to the halfway mark of their regular season without a loss by beating the Coyotes in a physical matchup.
    “We controlled play throughout,” said PI coach Scott Young. “Old Town played a hard, physical game and [the coaching staff] was most impressed with how we never once backed down from any play.”    
    Young said the Wildcat bench made significant contributions, and is helping make his team into a deeper team with more versatility. Josh Allen and Brandon Bonville scored first-half goals, while Nathaniel Postell and Wilder York assisting on the scoring plays. Wilder York scored off an Isaac LaJoie assist for the third goal, which came in the second half.
    Dillion Kingsbury saved three of five shots in goal for Presque Isle.
    Presque Isle boys 4, John Bapst 0 – At Bangor Thursday, strong play by the backs and midfielders complemented a solid offensive attack as the Wildcats dominated the Crusaders.
    The reserves again played a key role, with Ryan Thibeau coming off the bench to score two of the goals, both in the second half. Postell and York collected first-half goals for Presque Isle, which outshot Bapst, 25-6.
    Kingsbury had four saves in the contest.
    Ashland boys 2, Southern Aroostook 1 – At Dyer Brook last Wednesday, despite being down at halftime, the Hornets came back to earn the point-worthy victory.
    Cobb and Tarr hooked up for both second-half goals within five minutes of each other, with Cobb doing the scoring and Tarr providing the assist for both, as Ashland overcame the 1-0 halftime deficit.
    “I am very pleased with our defensive execution in this game,” said Paradis, who noted Andrew Libby did a great job preventing SA ace Dakota Sleeper from scoring throughout, while Kyle Spooner controlled the Warriors’ other threat, Patrick Goodall.
    Ashland and Central Aroostoook square off in a key matchup Friday in Mars Hill.
