Roger Morin, 65, of Houlton won the 2009 Maine Chess Championship Sept. 20, at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. The tournament, which featured 34 players, consisted of five rounds over two days at a time control of 40 moves in 90 minutes followed by a sudden death time control of game in 60 minutes, that means some games had the potential of lasting for up to five hours. Morin paired off against 25-year-old David Plotkin an American of Russian decent. The game ended in a draw giving Morin a win on tie a breaker. The last time Morin won the Maine Chess Championship was 29 years ago.
