To the editor:
Recently our mail carrier, Carroll Underwood, whom we have known for many years, stopped at our mailbox, and after our customary exchange of greetings, he pulled from his shirt pocket a 3-inch by 5-inch card on which he noted the following, based on pedometer readings:
— 8.9 miles a day
— 45 miles a week (on average)
—187 miles a month
—2,314 miles a year
This added up to “two times completely around the world since starting” in 1984.
He smiled and said he was surprised at the total. And still counting. As the old adage goes, that’s a lot of shoe leather. He added that all other mail carriers in our city would have similar totals on a yearly basis.
How many of us, fitness freaks or no, could challenge that mileage?
So have compassion for your mail carrier. Keep your mutts inside at delivery times, all the time, and keep your shovel and sidewalk sand handy as freezing weather and snow come our way. Our carriers are reliable, and seldom complain about anything.
