The regular season comes to an end next week for boys and girls soccer teams and teams are busy jockeying for key playoff position. The postseason kicks off Oct. 23 and 24 for some regions, while others must wait until Oct. 28 for the playoffs to begin.
The final Maine Principals’ Association Heal Points will be released shortly after the last regular season games are completed, but preliminary indications reveal 12 of the area’s 16 soccer squads are in the playoff picture as of Tuesday morning.
The following is a look at each region and possible playoff scenarios.
In Eastern Class B, Presque Isle (10-0-2, 90.4464 points) is third, and Caribou (6-2-3, 63.8520) is fifth in the 18-team region. If the playoffs were to start today, Presque Isle would host the No. 6 seed (currently Winslow. 5-6-1) in a quarterfinal on Wednesday, Oct. 28. If Caribou stays as the No. 5 seed, it would be on the road at the No. 4 seed (currently Mount View of Thorndike, 10-2-1) also on Oct. 28.The top nine teams make the playoffs in this region.
In Eastern Class D, three teams are in the playoff picture. Central Aroostook (9-3, 59.4388) is third, while Ashland (9-3, 53.8265) is fourth and Limestone-MSSM (3-8-1, 25.0638) is 10th. All three squads are in the playoff mix. On the outside looking in are Easton (5-9, 15.4105) is 13th, Fort Fairfield (4-7, 14.0306) is 15th and Washburn (2-9-1, 13.3291) is 16th. The top 10 teams make the postseason.
If the season ended today, Central Aroostook, at No. 3, would host the No. 6 seed (currently Wisdom, 9-3, 48.8401 points) and Ashland, at No. 4, would host the No. 5 seed (currently Southern Aroostook, 10-2, 51.1480). Both of those quarterfinals would be Oct. 28. Limestone-MSSM, as the No. 10 seed, would travel to the No. 7 seed (currently Machias, 8-3-1, 46.2765) for a preliminary playoff on Oct. 24.
In Eastern Class B, Presque Isle (12-0, 107.3980 points) is second, while Caribou (8-3-1, 61.6709) is sixth in the 18-team region. If the playoffs began today, Presque Isle, as the No. 2 seed, would host the No. 7 seed (currently Nokomis of Newport, 6-5-1, 47.1429) and Caribou, as the sixth seed, would travel to the No. 3 seed (currently Medomak Valley of Waldoboro, 10-2, 79.2857). Both of those quarterfinals would be played on Oct. 27.
In Eastern Class D, five of the six teams in this region appear playoff-bound. Ashland (10-2, 46.1224 points) is second, Easton (9-4-1, 36.6327) is fourth, Limestone-MSSM (6-5-1, 34.0689) is fifth, Central Arooostook (4-7-1, 32.4107) is sixth, and Fort Fairfield (6-4-1, 30.7015) is seventh. Washburn (2-7-3, 19.7832) is 10th and is likely out of the playoff mix. The top eight teams make the playoffs in this region
If the playoffs began today, Ashland, as the No. 2 seed, would host the No. 7 seed (currently Fort Fairfield); Easton, as the No. 4 seed, would host the No. 5 seed (currently Limestone-MSSM); and Central Aroostook, as the No. 6 seed, would travel to the No. 3 seed (currently Deer Isle-Stonington, 6-4-2). All three of those games would be played on Oct. 28.
