HIGH FLYING — Casey Cobb, top, of Ashland leaps over Van Buren goalie Marc Lajoie during Friday night’s rainy boys soccer game in Presque Isle. Ashland romped to a 4-0 shutout victory.
Presque Isle played just one game, and the goals came early and often in the lopsided win over Mattanawcook of Lincoln. The Wildcats went into last night’s rematch against Caribou with a 10-0-2 record.
The Fort Fairfield Tigers split their two matches coming off the harvest recess.
Summaries of games played through Monday, Oct. 12 are as follows:
Ashland 4, Van Buren 0 — At Presque Isle Friday evening, under a steady drizzle, Ashland blanked the visiting Crusaders to improve to 9-3 on the season, while Van Buren dropped to 4-7. Kenny Tarr led the Hornets with two goals and an assist, while Taylor Condon and Kenny Tarr each had one goal. Casey Cobb had two assists for the Hornets.
J.J. D’Ozier and Bobby Gardner shared time in net and combined to stop all 12 shots they faced. Van Buren goalie Mark Lajoie had 16 saves on 27 shots.
“We have a huge game coming up on Thursday,” Ashland coach Kevin Paradis said. “We play Wisdom away and my boys have been waiting since the first game of the season to avenge their loss to them [Pioneers].”
Ashland fell 2-1 to Wisdom in the season opener in a game that was halted due to a lightning storm.
“We need these points [against Wisdom] to give us a chance at home field advantage for the playoffs,” Paradis said. “We still have an outside chance to claim the No. 2 position for the playoffs.”
Presque Isle 10, Mattanawcook Academy 0 — At Presque Isle Friday afternoon, the Wildcats met Mattanawcook Academy in a game played under a steady rain. The goals poured in for the Wildcats as Presque Isle (10-0-2) romped to the easy victory over the winless Lynx (0-12).
Presque Isle was able to play people in a variety of different roles in the contest. The Wildcats peppered Mattanawcook goalie John French with 29 shots, with French making 14 saves. Presque Isle went with Andrew Kofstad in goal, giving regular goalie Dillion Kingsbury a chance to play in the field. Kofstad did not face a single shot, while Kingsbury made the most of his field chances, scoring two goals and assisting on another.
Other goal scores for the Wildcats were Nate Ackerson (two goals), Josh Allen (two goals), Wilder York (two goals), and Cole Richards and Nate Postell, both with one.
Madawaska 7, Fort Fairfield 0 – At Madawaska Thursday, the Owls made easy work of the Tigers behind Jon Lee, who scored a goal and assisted on two others. The Owls, who are the No. 1 team in Eastern Maine Class C, recorded the shutout as goalie Jamie Cyr handled all four shots he faced.
For the Tigers, Chris Weeks was busy throughout the contest as he saved 18 of 27 shots.
Fort Fairfield 3, Limestone-MSSM 1 – At Fort Fairfield last Tuesday, the game was tied with less than 17 minutes to play before Bryant Hale converted a Derek Dufour assist to put the Tigers on top. An insurance goal off the foot of Travis Noyes, with Josh Booth assisting, accounted for the final margin.
Josh Forsman gave the Eagles the early lead as he scored in the first half off a Dylan Caldwell assist. Fort tied the score later in the half when Booth tallied off an assist from Noyes.
Weeks made four saves on six shots and Limestone-MSSM’s Zach Moreau turned away eight of 20 shots.
