Island Falls Happenings

Mr. and Mrs Clayton Varney have returned home after spending about 10 days in Winterport with their son and wife, Nicky and Carol Varney. While there Clayton consulted several times with his orthomologist in Bangor. Mr. and Mrs Martin Pankratz have returned home to Manattan, Kansas after spending six months at their cottage on Pleasant Pond, enjoying the golf and the swimming and all their friends here in the area.     On Oct. 7 the Katahdin Public Library began a story time for 3-5-year-olds at 10 a.m. This will include stories, coloring and some block and play time. Children may participate for the entire hour or a portion and should be willing to stay without a parent.Contact 463-2372 or stop at the library during regular hours for more information.
Also a family history group has been started at the library. Using materials from The Island Falls Historical Society, information shared by members and on-line resources the members can research their families and assist others to do so.
The meetings will be held the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Contact Wally Drew at 528-2141 or Mary Joy at 463-2507 or at the library for more information.  Mrs. Leithea Porter left recently to spend some time in N. Carolina with her daughter and husband, Lynn and Paul Lewallen.
Have gotten my leaf-catcher now attached to my mower and have been out once gathering several loads of leaves, mostly from Sam’s yard and my own. It has been so rainy I have to get out and get them when the sun shines a bit.  Have lost my black cat as I haven’t seen him in about a week. Now all my meat scraps go into my garbage. Still have a coon who would love to have them but do not want to encourage him to hang around.
Deer are still arriving to graze and the young ones to cavort around my back lawn.  Have had lots of birds in the feeder and just recently have had nuthatches, even a white-breasted one. Am trying to keep the pigeons from arriving and eating everything in sight and so far, have been quite successful. They don’t seem to arrive as often as they did.
Open house planned
The non-profit St. Martin’s Thrift Store will hold an open house and sale on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 112  Maine Avenue, Millinocket, to mark the second anniversary of its move to the larger quarters and to celebrate more than 25 years of serving the area’s needs and to launch its low cost gown and accessories room and furniture room, in addition to its line of gently used clothing for men, women, children and babies.
All store proceeds help to support the non-denominational food pantry and emergency fuel fund. For more information call Jayne Jones at 207-723-4513, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Thursdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
