Jaime Brooke Friscia, daughter of Barb and Richard Friscia of Princeton Junction, N.J., and granddaughter of Philip and Beryl Lawrence of Mars Hill, won a silver medal at the Junior Youth National Rowing Championships in June 2009 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She rows for the Mercer Junior Row Club in West Windsor, N.J.
Lavenia Bouchard, from Westfield — a former town and city clerk — attended this event along with several hundred other Republican women.
During the four-day event, which was one of the largest national gatherings of Republicans this year, attendees participated in leadership training seminars, campaign management schools and political and policy workshops taught by nationally-recognized political strategists. They heard from Republican leaders and elected officials, policy experts, authors and other notable guests, including Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. Rotarian Tomi Henderson spoke to the group about her new pet Sugar Gliders, Ruth and Boaz. They are marsupials from Australia that are closely related to a possum. They resemble a flying squirrel as they can “glide down” from above to their chosen landing spot.
Their young are about the size of a grain of rice, which crawl into their mother‘s pouch, where they remain for a few weeks. When they are about 8 weeks of age, they are ready to leave their mother and bond with a new family.
Tomi got her gliders in May of this year. They eat a special diet of pelleted food, which supplies the protein they need. They also enjoy apples, grapes, yogurt and bread. Their apples are sprinkled with a special calcium vitamin supplement every other day.
They are expected to live between 12 – 15 years in captivity. Tomi and her family are enjoying their new pets.
