Maine Press Association honors Aroostook Republican and News

    LINCOLNVILLE — The Maine Press Association presented its Better Newspaper Contest awards on Oct. 17 at the organization’s annual conference at Point Lookout.     Individually, Aroostook Republican reporters Barbara Scott, Natalie Bazinet and Abigail Hunt were recognized for their efforts in writing and photography while Gayle Jackson, Lisa Anderson and Brian Albert helped win recognition in the advertising categories.
    The Sun Journal of Lewiston earned top honors in both the daily and weekend newspaper categories. In the under 4,000 paid circulation weekly newspaper division, the Mount Desert Islander was judged best of its class while The Piscataquis Observer placed third behind The York Weekly. In the over 5,000 circulation group, the Bridgton News placed first, followed by the Star-Herald of Presque Isle and the Ellsworth American.
    More than 30 judges from Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island evaluated hundreds of entries in various categories from headlines to investigative reporting.
    The awards won by Aroostook Republican staff include:
    First place in the Editorial Page category.
    In-Paper Circulation Promo entitled “Happy Mother’s Day” by staff, first place.
    Feature Headline ”Children’s book plants potato farming” by staff, second place.
    Sports Feature entitled “Dash for cash” by Hunt, second place.
    News Photo entitled “Young Marines” by Scott, third place.
    Feature Photo entitled “Veteran Wayne Little” by Bazinet, third place.
    Sports Photo entitled “Washburn sophomore” by Hunt, third place.
    Supplement/Special Section entitled “The County Gift Guide” by staff, third place.
    News/Sports Headline “Swedes cross Atlantic – again” by staff, third place.
