To the editor:
As Caribou Chief of Police, I see children who lack an advocate in their young lives. Luckily, all Maine children have one in U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe.
Last winter, I joined other Maine law enforcement officers asking Sen. Snowe to continue to be a champion for our most at-risk young people, especially during the national health care debate. She did just that. While much can and will be said about all the thousands of provisions in the health care reform legislation recently approved by the U.S. Senate’s Finance Committee, I am particularly proud that Sen. Snowe used her clout to keep a watchful eye on provisions that help our youngest and most vulnerable children.
Extending health care coverage to more at-risk children is a major accomplishment. Another major accomplishment is providing significant federal funding for the first time ever to voluntary home visiting programs, proven to reduce child abuse and neglect. Both protect at-risk kids, keep our communities safe, and reduce future crime.
Maine’s children are very fortunate to have a friend like Sen. Snowe in Washington who truly has their best interests at heart.
