Winter skin care seminars planned for Star City

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – This month, the Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library will partner with The Aroostook Medical Center [TAMC] and the Nordic Heritage Sports Club to present two seminars on winter skin care. Funding for these programs is from Neutrogena through the American Association for the Advancement of Science to the Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library.     Even during the winter months, it’s important to take measures toward skin cancer prevention and protecting one’s skin against the elements. Although UV levels are typically lower during the winter, fresh snow can reflect up to 80 percent of the sun’s rays. Overall, this effect can double one’s exposure to UV rays, especially at higher altitudes.
There are several ways to minimize the effects of sun and wind exposure. Methods include staying hydrated by drinking adequate amounts of water, wearing polarized sunglasses to prevent long-term eye damage, and, of course, applying lip balm and sun block that contains an SPF 15 protection or higher. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, it’s crucial to apply enough sun block to cover all exposed areas (roughly 2 ounces) and apply at least every 90 minutes.
For those who would like to learn more about ways to keep skin healthy while enjoying the outdoors, Turner Memorial Library will be providing two free seminars for the public. Both programs will include a medical professional from TAMC on-hand to provide information and address any winter skin care questions. In addition, there will be giveaways from Neutrogena and Garnier Nutritioniste while supplies last.
The first seminar will be held Thursday, Nov. 19 from 4-6 p.m. at the library. All attendees of this seminar will also be entered into a drawing to win a Neutrogena gift basket. The second seminar will be held at the Nordic Heritage Center Friday, Nov. 20 from 6-8 p.m. Attendees will also be able to watch as area ski teams kick-start the winter sports season with a post-seminar competition.
