Archery to be added to PE curriculum

An all day workshop was recently held at Madawaska High School for county educators, recreational specialists and community volunteers in whom the participants were certified to teach the National Archery in Schools Program.  The volunteer instructors from the Maine Bow Hunters Association, Jerome and Tina Richard, along with Emily Jones of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife directed the participants through the multiple aspects of the national archery curriculum. Consistent stressing of the steps required for archery success and safety allowed the students to fully learn and appreciate the sport of archery. Participants of the workshop are all now fully certified as Basic Archery Instructors as part of the National Archery in the Schools Program.
The Madawaska School  Department worked collaboratively with Union 122 staff to provide this local training opportunity. The Woodland School, New Sweden School, Madawaska Elementary School and Madawaska High School students will be the beneficiaries of this new physical education curriculum. The equipment, bows, targets, arrows were purchased because of the generosity of the Perloff Family Foundation in conjunction with the Maine Community Foundation Fast Track Grants program awarded to both school departments.
